Pathogens Virus Bacteria • Single cell organisms. • Can be cured with anti-biotic. • Ex. Strep throat, E-coli infection. Fungal • Single or multi cell organisms . Can be treated with anti fungal medication. • Can also be used to help make some meds (anti-biotic, toxins) Ex. some rashes like thrush, athletes foot. Protozoa • Single-celled parasites living and multiplying in the body. • The general term for these parasites is protozoa. • Protozoa enter the body through the mouth or skin. • Protozoa that enter through the mouth usually do so through unclean water or food. Protozoa that enter through the skin usually do so through an insect bite. • Treated with various medications and even surgery, results vary. Transmission • How you get a pathogen or how you get sick • • • Direct Person to person most common way Std's are spread Animal to person Mom to Unborn child- through the placenta or during labor Indirect • Droplet transmission- cough or sneeze. Only go about 3 feet • Particle transmission- smaller than droplets can stay in the air for extended periods of time and travel through air currents. Vaccines • Biological preps that improve immunity to a virus. • They usually contain a small amount of the virus (Active) or something that can resemble the virus (Latent). • Vaccines stimulate the immune system and give it the ability to recognize and destroy the virus if it encounters it later.
