Rational: As the title implies, one of the main recurrent motifs of the novel The
Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is a kite. As a way of connecting with the text, it will be helpful to
construct and personally decorate a kite of your own.
Directions: Follow the instructions below and make your own kite. Student may elect to work
with one other student in the class.
The kite must be decorated with four sections. You may choose any four of the six options listed
below:
1. Theme of “Man’s Inhumanity to Man”. Title the section with this theme. Include three
quotes from The Kite Runner that demonstrate the theme. The quotes must be typed or neatly
printed. You must include the page number at the end of the quote.
2. Theme of “Discrimination, prejudice, bigotry, class structure”. Title the section with this
theme. Include three quotes from The Kite Runner that demonstrate the theme. The quotes must
be typed or neatly printed. You must include the page number at the end of the quote.
3. Symbolism - Select a symbol used in the The Kite Runner. You cannot use the kite as your
choice for the symbol. In this section, you must state what the object/character/event being used
as a symbol is, and what that symbol stands for. Explain in at least two full sentences how the
author uses that symbol in the novel. In addition, you must supply one quote from the book
showing that particular use of symbolism. You must include the page number at the end of the
quote.
4. Choose a literary device (personification, alliteration, allusion, hyperbole, irony, simile,
metaphor, etc) and title this section with the literary device you chose. Include at least three
quotes from the book showing the use of that literary device. Include the page number at the end
of the quote.
5. The Sport of Kite Running – This section should include the history and development of this
Afghan pastime. Be sure to include the “How To’s” of the sport. ((i.e. How is it played?) Make sure
you use correct MLA format to cite the sources you used to obtain your information.
6. Motifs – Choose a motif used in The Kite Runner. Title this section with the name of the motif.
State the theme that the motif helps to develop. Include at least three quotes from the novel
showing the use of this motif and include the page number at the end of the quote.
Each quote can only be used once.
In addition, you will have a 5th section at the center of the kite. This section will be titled MY
REFLECTIONS. Include a paragraph (at least five sentences) with your thoughts on what you learned
from this novel.

This project will be completed during two class periods. If you do not use this time wisely,
or are absent on the days set aside for completing this project, you will be responsible for
using your own time outside of class to complete the project.

materials with which to decorate your kite. Ideas for materials include but are not limited
to the following:
