Senior English – Week 19
Monday, January 4, 2016
Objective: To understand imperialism.
Activities:
1) Procedural Stuff:
 3 hall passes per quarter.
 Half-credit for all assignments over 100 points. No credit for daily work that was done in
class and/or homework that a student just didn’t do.
 You may only make up major assignments and tests/quizzes during the quarter they are
assigned.
 If you are new to my class, you may write a personal letter to read at the end of the
semester.
 You need a comp book. We will start with #1 on our warm-ups.
2) Quick write 1: Imperialism means to extend a country’s influence and control over another
country through diplomacy and military force. With that being said, write whether you believe
that the U.S. is an imperialistic country or not. Give reasons for your answer.
3) Background lesson on imperialism. Take focused notes.
Tuesday, January 5, 2016
Objective: To read, “Shooting an Elephant”.
Activities:
1) Quick Write 2: Write about a time that you felt pressured by others to do something that you
didn’t feel right about or simply didn’t want to do. Explain what happened, how it turned out,
and what you learned from it.
2) Power point notes: Take notes over George Orwell. You may use the same paper you used for
the notes on Imperialism, just skip a line and label the sections.
3) Vocabulary: Copy the vocabulary words and do the assignment by Friday.
4) Reading: Read “Shooting and Elephant” beginning on p. 1164. Complete the handout on the
story’s elements. You will have tomorrow to work on this as well. It will all be due Thursday.
There will be a reading quiz on Friday that may also include vocabulary from this story.

Objective: To read “Shooting an Elephant” and complete the study guide.
Activities:
1) QW #3: How far would you go to have power and/or wealth? Explain why.
2) Finish reading “Shooting an Elephant” and complete the study guide.
It is due tomorrow.
3) Reminder: vocabulary due Friday; quiz Friday.

Objective: To read “A Hanging” by Orwell.
Due today: Study guide for “Shooting an Elephant”
Activities:
1) Warm-up/quick write 4: Imagine that the world went dark – no electricity, no sun shining, no
internet. Write a story that explains why and how this happened.
2) Read “A Hanging” by Orwell and complete the study questions.
3) Quiz tomorrow over vocabulary, imperialism, Orwell, and the stories. The vocabulary homework
will also be due.

Objective: To access understanding of this week’s learning material.
Due now: Vocabulary – pass it up.
Due end of class: study guide for “A Hanging”.
Activities:
1) Quick write 5: Of the two essays that we read this week, which was your favorite and why?
Discuss what you think was the best part of that selection and how you interpreted it.
2) Quiz
3) Finish your study guide for “A Hanging” if you need to.
4) Grammar Practice: subject/verb agreement
