By Jarrett Morley James Gensil Mike Kiely BACKGROUND Trojan War is over… Odysseus starts on his way home… Survives the gods anger (Cyclops, lotus-eaters, Sirens, etc)… Odysseus makes it home, sees men living in his house, trying to woo his wife. Makes him ANGRY. Odysseus’ Revenge is the story of Odysseus coming home to his kingdom, only to find his son and daughter being tortured (not literally), by suitors. Suitors keep trying to ask for Odysseus’ wife, Penelopes’ hand, and they try to kill the younger son, Telemachus. http://www.viddler.com/v/78b98335 Video of Movie Clip of Odysseus’ Revenge Odysseus: Mortal man. Hero of the Trojan War, came up with the Trojan Horse. Gone from home for 20 years, ½ war 1/2 journey home. King of Ithaca, when returned home, finds his home ransacked and suitors trying to woo Penelope. CHARACTERS Antinous-one of two main suitors for Penelope, violent and cruel, shows no respect. Eurymachus-other main suitor, similar to Antinous, planned the failed MURDER of Telemachus. Characters Telemachus-son of Odysseus, helps father in fight against suitors, was searching for father after the Trojan War. Penelope-Odysseus’ wife, faithful to him, doesn’t believe he is dead. Conflict The conflict in Odysseus’ Revenge is that he wants to get rid of all the suitors trying to court his wife, but the only way to get rid of them, is to kill them, which is something that Odysseus does not want to have to do, but ends up doing in the end. Internal conflict is Odysseus does not want to commit murder, but that is his only choice. External conflict is these suitors are all trying to court his wife. Odysseus Motivation: To get back home to his family. Also to get rid of all of the suitors courting his wife, Penelope. Motivation The theme was if one man is going to steal another mans stuff, that man will kill you. This theme is like the old saying an eye for an eye ( Hammurabi’s Code), except taken a little too extreme(Death for robbery). Lessons Learned… Never assume anything. The suitors assumed Odysseus was dead. That did not turn out very well for them. Always keep trying. Odysseus never gave up, and eventually made it all the way back home. Be brave. Odysseus ended up killing the suitors, even though he didn’t want to. He stood up to the suitors. That took bravery.
