Unit 5: Atomic & Nuclear Structure (3 weeks)
Electronic Structure
Evidence for the Atomic Theory
Atomic Masses
Atomic Number and mass number
*Electron energy levels, atomic spectra, orbitals
Chapters 6, 7 & 21
*Periodic relationships
Nuclear Structure
Nuclear Equations
Half-lives
Overview: This is a review unit. Much of the material, except for periodic relationships, was covered in
Chemistry I/IH. Please complete the materials in this study guide in preparation for a class discussion upon
return from break. We will then learn about periodic relationships, and the mathematical applications and test
out on the material. If you need help, there will be study sessions on Thursday, 11/19/15 AND Monday,
11/30/15 during lunch and after school.
TO DO:
1. Read Chapters 6, 7 and 21 and take notes. If a section is REVIEW: Make sure to summarize all the key ideas,
and make note of all key formulas and equations (unless otherwise noted.) If a section is NEW: Take thorough
notes, unless otherwise indicated.
2. Complete the questions and/or assigned problems for each section.
3. Come to study session on Thursday, 11/19/15 or Monday, 11/30/15 for help completing the study guide.
Chapter 6: Electronic Structure of Atoms
6.1 The Wave Nature of Light: NEW: Take detailed notes.
6.2 Quantized Energy and Photons: NEW. “ “ “
6.3 Line Spectra & The Bohr Model: NEW & REVIEW. Understand equations qualitatively. (Do NOT need to
calculate values, but should be able to make comparisons.)
6.4 The Wave Behavior of Matter: Mostly NEW. Read for understanding, but no need to calculate or do
qualitative assessments using the equations. Focus on concepts, not calculations or equations.
6.5 Quantum Mechanics (QM) and Atomic Orbitals: NEW. Read for understanding. SKIP QUANTUM
NUMBERS.
6.6 Representation of Orbitals: mostly REVIEW. Again, don’t need to know Quantum numbers!
6.7 Many-electron Atoms: Mostly REVIEW. Skip Quantum Numbers
