All major body systems will be covered. Classroom work is supplemented with laboratory exercises encompassing analysis and dissection, including a variety of body organs and one invertebrate. This course will be beneficial to students looking at a degree in health care or a medical field such as nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, or any of the allied health fields. Major grades: 70%: includes tests, formal lab reports, and projects. *Please be aware of this when accessing grades online. Assignments aren’t always out of 100 points, as to weight some assignments more important than others. Tutoring: I am available by appointment or during my tutoring hours. If I am not available students are encouraged to attend tutoring with another science teacher. Required Materials: Students will also need an organized way of maintaining their classwork and notes Three-ring binder Dividers (6) Spiral notebook Colored pencils Requested Materials: Paper towels Disinfectant wipes Disposable gloves (for dissections) Homework: Homework assignments will be given often throughout the week. The majority will be readings and classwork that was not completed during our allotted class time. It is the student’s responsibility to ask questions if you do not understand an assignment. All unique work must be shown to get credit for a problem. No one said that this course was going to be easy. Balancing this coursework in addition to your other classes will probably prove to be a struggle. Keep in mind that I am and will always be on your side. With everything that we do in our classroom, there is a purpose to benefit you. However, it is up to you to utilize the resources available to you if help is needed. There is me, for one thing, but don’t forget your classmates. They are a wonderful resource and by helping you, they are also helping themselves. The best way to learn something is by teaching it. “Help will always be given...to those who ask for it.” -- Albus Dumbledore Dear Parents and Guardians: This year, I have the privilege to teach your son or daughter PAP Anatomy and Physiology. My goal is for your student to leave my classroom with an appreciation for anatomy and physiology, and recognize the importance of the structure-function relationship in life. Please look over the attached policies and expectations I have in place for my class. Please also remind your student that these guidelines are in place so that our learning environment can be safe and productive for all learners in the classroom. Studying any science is demanding. Because the vocabulary in science is so unfamiliar, learning it has been compared to learning a foreign language. New concepts will require mastery of prior concepts in order to be successful. Therefore practice and repetition is essential. Your student can therefore expect to have homework on a regular basis, and will be expected to complete assignments on time. If your student is struggling, please do not wait until the end of the grading period to contact me. I will do everything I can on my end to help and to encourage your child. I am available for tutoring most mornings and most afternoons, but advanced notice is appreciated. I have also set up a website that will have most of the worksheets and notes that we do in class as well as a few other helpful links. This is typically a great resource for both parents and students so please utilize it. The website is: http://sommersscience.weebly.com * Please note that my website is shared with my other courses as well. I have found in recent years that my fastest reply is through e-mail, but please feel free to contact me using any of the information below. My conference period is 4th period 10:37 – 11:27pm. I look forward to a rewarding and productive year with your student. Thank you in advance for your support and help. Sincerely, Kayla Sommers (281) 357-3230 x1110 kaylasommers@tomballisd.net
