COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a one semester course designed to give an
introduction to basic human anatomy (structure) and physiology (function). Lecture, inclass activities and dissection will be used. Correct anatomical vocabulary will be
emphasized. The class is beneficial for anyone planning a career in the medical field as
well as anyone interested in learning more about the human body. An honors option
grade is available upon full completion of honors requirements.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Biology 1 (Cells and Variation) and
Biology 2 (Evolution and Ecology)
TEXT: Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology (Maritin/Bartholomew) book and CD;
Dead Men Do Tell Tales by William Maples; Assortment of scientific and medical
articles to be provided within the course.
COURSE MATERIALS:
1. Pencil or pen (multiple colors are beneficial)
2. Binder
3. Lined loose leaf paper for activities
UNITS:
1. Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
2. Skeletal System
3. Muscular System
4. Cardiovascular System
Dissection of a fetal pig and, maybe, other specimens will be included.
GRADING PRACTICES:
Semester grade is weighted in the following categories:
cumulative final exam 20%
in-class activities, labs, dissection and homework 30%.
tests/quizzes 50%
Regular daily attendance and classroom participation is critical for full appreciation of
class content and experiences. Unexcused absences will not be allowed to make-up
assignments. Excused absences will be allowed to make-up tests and assignments, but
must be initiated by the student and done outside of normal class time within 1 week of
the absence. Assignments are due at the start of a class period unless otherwise noted.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Part of class participation is being prepared for class. It is very important that students be
on time for class and ready to start when class begins. This means all students must have
their books, pencils, and paper on their desk at the start of class. Students will not be
allowed to go to their lockers once class has begun.
It is also extremely important for students to participate actively every day in class. This
includes asking and answering questions, paying attention, contributing to a team when
working on group assignments, and working to your fullest potential with daily
classroom activities.
CLASSROOM RULES
My classroom rules and expectations revolve around 4 basic principles. BE
RESPECTFUL, BE REPSONSIBLE, BE SAFE and BE YOUR BEST. If followed
by everyone, specific rules should not be necessary. Please understand that we are all
part of a community of learners where all are to be supportive of others in the class and
not infringe on others’ right to an education. We will discuss these rules further and
more specifically in class or, if need be, one-on-one outside of the normal class time.
CELL PHONES, FOOD AND DRINK
No food is allowed in the science lab rooms and only water in a closed container may be
brought into class. However, on dissection days, no drinks will be allowed. In science
this is an issue of health and safety. Additionally, the use of cell phones or music players
is strictly prohibited as they can be detrimental and distracting to the learning process. If
you choose to bring an educational electronic device to class, you are entrusted to use
such devices only at times specified by the instructor and only for the educational
purpose at hand.
HONESTY
Dishonesty on homework will result in a loss of points for that activity. A second
infraction will result in a failing grade for the packet. This applies for both parties.
Cheating on a test will result in:
1. A zero on the test
2. Notification of your parents
3. An unsatisfactory citizenship grade
Grading Scale:
A = 93-100
A- = 90-92
B+= 87-89
B = 83-86
B- = 80-82
C+= 77-79

Parents: Please review these classroom policies. My hope is that these guidelines will
lead to a very successful year for your son or daughter. I invite you to email me any
time you have a concern at myemm@pkwy.k12.mo.us. I also encourage email as an
efficient means of communication. My phone number is 314 415 7600 ext 27649 but
is checked much less frequently than email.
