Learning the Lingo
Description: It’s always a good idea to assume that, despite having a lifetime of experience in film;
students will not have a command of the language of the discipline yet. Students will receive a list of
common terms and techniques (on the next page) which they will have to find the definitions to either online
or in their textbook. During the basic overview of Mise-en-Scene, Cinematography and Editing that will be
covered in class, a straightforward exam on all the terms will be taken, along with a more creative video
production assessment. For this assignment, it is ok to “copy & paste” the definitions from other sources
Product: Students will have created a common list of defined terms and techniques to study from for the
term exam, and will be used in the future for other projects and assessment.
Objective: The project is designed to allow students to:
 Acquire the language of cinematic analysis
 Begin to raise the students cinematic intelligence for the purposes of class discussions and
presentations
Requirements:
 List of 80 defined common terms and techniques
 Vocabulary Exam
Total Points:
 30 points for completed list of terms and techniques
 80 point vocabulary exam
