Teacher Notes Protein Synthesis

Protein Synthesis
Teacher Notes: The intent of this activity is that the student will go through a process simulating proteins
synthesis. (Transcription and translation) The end result is a key chain which represents a protein.
1. Print 2 DNA template pages. Use one to make the key - color each amino acid with the correct bead
color. This will give the teacher a quick reference to see if translation is correct when the student brings
the teacher the worksheet and key chain.
2.. Cut out each individual strand of DNA.
3. Designate an area of the teacherr room to represent the nucleus (where the DNA templates can be
found). I use the front of my room and tape the DNA templates on the board.
4. Handout Protein Synthesis lab worksheet to students.
5. Assign students a number (1-24). This will be the DNA template for them to use to build the key
chain.
6. Students bring worksheet to DNA located in the nucleus. Students may not leave the nucleus as they
transcribe the DNA template to mRNA.
7. The mRNA (written on the worksheet) may leave the nucleus and head to the ribosomes (desk) and
then translation may begin. (students will need a codon table or circle)
8. Once translation is complete - students can start building the protein.
9. As students begin to build - have a colored pencil matching the color of the bead and have students
color that block of the mRNA.
10. Before the teacher ties off the end of the protein - make sure the beads are correct (compare to the
teacher key made in #1) - if not correct - send student back to correct the sequence of amino acids.
Materials: I use pony beads from any craft store or Wal-Mart - just make sure the teacher have 20
different colors. Key chain holders can also be purchased at the craft stores. Floral wire may be used to
build the key chain - I use stretchy plastic line and cut it long enough for students to add beads. (I think
all the templates code for about 11 amino acids) In order to finish, students bring the completed key
chain to the teacher. The teacher then is responsible for finishing the key chain.
