INST: Review the meaning of nonfiction text. Review
notes taken last week on types of nonfiction text
focusing on the difference between literary nonfiction
(expository) and procedural text. Introduce new
vocabulary: Proverb, Parable, Parody with examples of
each. Students use new vocabulary to complete
anticipation guide.
INST: Students read “Taming the Bicycle” by Mark Twain.
Discuss the text structure of the piece. Use SOAPSTone
strategy to begin analyzing the text. Discuss analysis
whole group.

Dr. Spencer Johnson. Discuss what change is and how
we are affected by change; negative/positive effects.
In groups students discuss changes they have
experienced. Complete change sheet. Discuss whole
group.
INST: Continuing with “Taming the Bicycle”, students
review vocabulary from the story. Review short-answer
questions as a group as a means to discuss the essay
more in depth. Student then choose a question they
would like to answer. Discuss chapter one of Of Mice
and Men.
