Computer Applications Grade 11 Course Syllabus Mrs. Carbaugh Course Description Computer Applications course is a competency based course that is designed to prepare students for computer skills needed for college or career. This course will enable students to develop skills in word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet research, desktop publishing, graphics, and presentations. Emphasis is placed on computer projects and activities. Textbook and Materials Microsoft Office 2007, Introductory, and 500 Computer Projects BASICS. and the Internet. Related drill sheets and other teacher related materials. Various computer programs Grading Procedures Grades will be based on the total number of points per projects completed and numbers of jobs completed during the marking period, tests, and include points for the following: Class performance, cooperation, and participation during class Attitude and sense of responsibility for classroom rules Chapter reviews/quizzes Log Sheets Following directions Appropriate work behavior Care and condition of computer equipment The above items will be graded during the marking period. A student’s grade will be determined by total number of project points completed, job level performance, and tests. Students will receive a pass/fail grade for each marking period. Job Level grades will be calculated and posted only at the end of the marking period. Each term grade counts as 22.5% of the final course average. At the end of the school year, all students will be required to take the final exam, which is 10% of the final course average. This course is pass/fail. 1. Final Exam – Combined Projects Grades may be checked on MMS Parent/Student Portal Expectations, Requirements, and Classroom Rules: Students are required to be prepared for class with necessary materials [project job assignments/textbook, folders, pen or pencil.] 2. Students are required to be on time for class or have a pass from a teacher if late. Students are to be prepared for class when the bell rings and have their computer ready for class work. 3. Students are required to read each assigned section, follow directions, and complete assigned projects. Daily class projects should be completed with name and assignment at the top of their paper unless otherwise noted. 10-11 4. Students are expected to exhibit the appropriate work habits, personality traits, and positive attitudes demanded in today’s competitive high-tech work place. 5. Students are expected to participate in and contribute to class discussions, assignments, demonstrations, projects, and learning activities. 6. Students are expected to be respectful and courteous towards each other and teachers. They should not talk while the teacher or classmate is talking and be on their best behavior the entire time they are in the classroom. 7. Students are expected to be respectful and careful with the school’s equipment. 8. During class time, students are not permitted to go to their lockers and should visit the restroom only in an emergency. No large purses or book bags are allowed at your desk. 9. Students are expected to come for extra help when they do not understand a concept. 10. Students absent from class for any reason may obtain and complete projects on their own time. 11. Students are not permitted to use the computer lab equipment for any unnecessary reasons during class, for example--no computer games, no unnecessary printing, no printing or typing material with inappropriate words, and NO Internet unless allowed by the instructor. 12. Students are not permitted to use the Internet without permission, and the use of the Internet must be school related. Absolutely no downloading from the Internet is permitted. 13. Students must adhere to the school district’s Technology Policy and other district regulations or expect to receive appropriate discipline according to the discipline policy.
