Rome – A Quick Timeline

753 BCE – “Roma”, or the city of Rome, is
founded. (It is traditionally said to have
been founded by Romulus, the son of the
war god Mars.)

509 BCE – The last of the kings is
expelled, and Rome becomes a Republic.

312 BCE – the first aqueduct is built

200-100 BCE –
Rome defeats the
Gauls, the Celts, the
Greeks and Hannibal


48 BCE – Julius Caesar
defeats Pompey and
becomes the sole
dictator of Rome. He
sees himself as an
emperor of sorts. (In
45 BCE he has a 12month “Julian”
calendar invented,
which we still use
today.) Died 44 BCE.

32 BCE - Mark Antony
divorces his wife and
marries Cleopatra of
Egypt.
 (In 30 BCE Antony
and Cleopatra
committed suicide,
and Rome got control
of Egypt)


27 BCE – Roman
military leader
Octavius crowns
himself “Augustus
Caesar”, or Roman
Emperor
 When his sons die, he
adopts a boy named
Tiberius and names
him his heir.


Somewhere between
6 BCE and 2CE, Jesus
Christ is born in
Galilee. (Now a part
of Palestine.)
 Christ was executed
at the age of 33 for
claiming to be the
King of the Jews


In 14 CE, when Augustus dies and Tiberius
becomes emperor, there are 5 million
citizens in the Roman Empire.

37 CE – Tiberius is
murdered, and is
succeeded by his violent
and insane grandson
Caligula, who was
reputed to have
committed rape, incest,
pedophilia, torture and
murder. It was said he
turned the palace into a
brothel, referred to
himself as a god and
named his horse his
general counsel. Not
surprisingly, he is the
subject of a number of
pornographic films. He
was assassinated in 41CE

41 CE – Claudius becomes Emperor of Rome
and invades Britain.

In 54 CE Claudius is
assassinated by his
second wife, and then
succeeded by her
crazy-ass son, Nero.
In 64 CE Nero sets
fire to Rome and
blames it on the
Christians.

By the year 100 CE, there are a million people
living in Rome

By 164 CE, the plague spreads throughout the
Roman Empire; it lasts 200 years and kills
hundreds of thousands of people

In 177 CE it becomes law that Christians in the
Roman Empire are to be persecuted

312 – Constantine
becomes Roman
Emperor (He also
founds a new city,
Constantinople, or
Byzantium, or
Istanbul, in modernday Turkey. He
makes this the new
capital of the Roman
Empire.) He died a
Christian, and after
that there was no
more persecution of
Christians in the
Roman Empire.

406 CE – Barbarians attack France from the North

410 CE – Visigoths attack Rome. That same year,
Rome withdraws from Britain

452 CE – The Huns invade Italy, followed shortly by
the Ostrogoths.

By 500 CE, the population of Rome is less than
100,000

By 554 CE, Rome is reduced to a camp of fewer
than 30,000 people, and the western Empire is no
more
