What is science? Science is the process of systematic acquisition of knowledge through experiment in order to discover, explore and explain natural phenomena. Why study science? We study science for the following reasons: 1. It helps us to discover the truth about the universe. 2. It is a discipline of enquiries 3. It is a fundamental subject that crisps into everyday life, informs us about every single thing we do, reveal to us how the world works, the discovery of how the world works now and how to make it better than just believing what one tells us. 4. It builds the technological world we live in and establishes the truth about the world and humanity. 5. It is about measurement, collection of valid data, reasoning, analyzing and appropriating the collected data in order to make changes and establish cause and effect. 6. Science is crucial and important to developing new technological world. 7. Science is a solution to long-term survival of our spaces through discovering, fixing the problem by application of deep scientific knowledge. For example, depletion of ozone layer, nuclear fission. 8. It helps humanity through medicine- discovery of HIV vaccine. 9. It makes us to make informed decision in business, corporate world and politics. 10. It is a formal academic subject that increases our capacity or potential beyond mere knowledge but addressing the real issues. 11. It is a powerful expression of creativity and curiosity to fulfill our potentials as human beings. 12. It helps us to think and equip ourselves. Why teach science? I teach science to make my students understand how our world works. To help my students communicate with the world around them, thus making the world a global village. To help my students solve humanity problem. To help my students think positively and critically and apply their knowledge by looking for information and its application and appropriation to solve humanity problem. To help my students make decision in what to do and believe and how to value their environment. What are the strands in senior science? Strands in Grade 11 and 12, senior science according to Ontario curriculum is as follows: BIOLOGY SBI3U- Biology, Grade 11, University Preparation. SBI3C- Biology, Grade 11, College Preparation. SNC3E- Science, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation. SNC4M- Science, Grade 12, University/College Preparation. SNC4E- Science, Grade 12, Workplace Preparation. What makes a good science lesson? What makes a good science lesson is a good lesson plan that focuses on ‘doing’ and doing it yourself. How do we inspire our students to pursue science? Make science simple and interesting through application of appropriate teaching strategies. Demonstrate simple experiment to establish your facts. Make science real with simple illustration of concepts through material available around them. Encourage students to carry out investigation through experiments by themselves. Motivate, and encourage the students even when they don’t perform to your expectation in your science subjects. How does the Ministry Statement on the nature of Science impact your teaching? It helps me to understand the concepts of Science. It helps me to develop the skills, strategies and habits of mind required for Science inquiry. It helps me to relate Science to technology, society and the environment.
