IGCSE CIE BIOLOGY
30% Paper 1. 45 minutes (40 marks) 40 multiple-choice
questions. You choose one answer you consider correct
from a choice of 4 possible answers.
50% Paper 3- 1h15mins1⁄4 (80 marks)Short-answer
questions and structured questions. You should write your
answers in the spaces provided.
20% Paper 5. 1 and 1⁄4 hours (40 marks) You do a
practical exam, which is supervised by a teacher. There
are usually 2 questions testing 4 skill areas.
A* Exceptional work with virtually no errors showing excellent
knowledge and understanding
A Excellent work- the student has attempted the higher level
questions/skills but may not have succeeded completely
B
Good performance but higher level work/skills not attempted
C The student’s work shows an understanding of the basic concepts
and skills.
D The student’s work shows some understanding but work is
incomplete
So what do I need to do to make sure I
get the best grade possible ?
In the past Successful students have:
1. -Completed all class work
2. -Completed all homework
3. -Asked questions when they did not understand
something (in and outside of lessons).
4. -Looked up parts of the topics they found difficult to
understand.
5. -Regularly looked over their notes.
6. -Copied up their notes into neat revision aids
7. -Practised past exam questions
8. -Got friends and family to test their knowledge
9. -Attended revision sessions.
What is science ?
"Science is the pursuit of knowledge
and understanding of the natural and
social world following a systematic
methodology based on evidence.“

Chapter 1-Classifying
Living things
Year 10 Biology
How do we know something is
alive ?
MRSGREN
• There are seven life
processes that all living
organisms carry out to
ensure survival and
continuance of the
species.
• How can we define
each of these life
processes?
•

•
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
Movement
• An organism’s ability to move parts of
itself, to change position or to go to
different areas to find food/avoid danger
Respiration
• The ability of an organism to release
energy from sources of food (glucose)
normally using oxygen
Sensitivity
• The ability to detect a stimulus in the
environment and to respond to that
stimulus
Growth
• This is a permanent increase in the size,
mass and complexity of an organism.
Reproduction
• This is the ability to produce offspring
(new individuals of the same species) by
either sexual or asexual means
Excretion
• This is the removal any waste products
that have been produced by the body’s
chemical reactions (metabolism)
Nutrition
• This is the process of obtaining and using
nutrients to provide the energy, growth
and health needs of the organism
The Binomial System
Year 10 Biology
The five kingdoms
• Give each kingdom its
¨common name¨
• Make sure a ¨brief¨
description of each kingdom
is given.
What are the 5 Kingdoms of Life
• Living things can be divided into 5
kingdoms.
• The animals (heterotrophs) that eat
food to get energy and grow
• The plants (autotrophs) that make
food to get energy and grow
• Fungi (saprotrophs) that decompose
material to get energy and grow
• Bacteria (monera) that are singlecelled organisms with no nucleus
• Protists (protista) that are singlecelled organisms with a nucleus
What do binomial names tell us?
• Closely related organisms are
classified into similar groups.
• Binomial means two names.
• The binomial name tells us both
the genus and species (common
name) of a particular organism.
• If organisms have the same genus
they are very closely related.
• The system is in Latin, and is used
by all scientists worldwide.
Carl Linnaeus
• The Genus is given a capital letter,
the species name is not.
