About the Institute of International
Education (IIE)
 Administers the Fulbright Fellowships on behalf of the U.S.
Department of State & 200 other programs including
Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3) and the
Whitaker Int’l Program.
 Serves 18,000 students, teachers, scholars, and
professionals in 175 countries annually
 Runs the IIENetwork: a global resource for 4,500
professionals at 1,100 member colleges & universities
 Collects and disseminates data on international student
mobility via Open Doors and Project Atlas
Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3)
Program Overview
 Global E3: : Global Engineering Education Exchange
 Coordinates academic exchanges (study abroad) of mostly
undergraduate engineering students from universities worldwide
 Students can spend up to one year in host country
 Tuition-Swap: Student pays tuition at home university, not to host
 History/Impact
 Approximately 250 engineering students study abroad annually
through Global E³
 Over 3,000 engineering students gained international
experience through Global E³ since its inception in 1995
 Global Presence
 65 member universities in 20 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin
America, the Middle East, Australia, and the U.S.
Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3)
Program Benefits
 Centralized Administration (provided by IIE)
 Eliminates the need to manage, while not precluding, multiple
bilateral agreements with overseas universities (many members
concurrently and successfully operate bilaterals)
 Provides more options for students to study in countries or fields
which existing bilateral agreements may not accommodate
 Access, through single agreement with IIE, to dozens of universities
 Cost Savings
 Consortium members offer "tuition exchanges" where students pay
tuition to their home campuses, and not to the host universities
overseas
 Reduces administrative cost of managing multiple MOUs and
bilateral exchanges
 Unlimited number of students exchanged under one fee
Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3)
Program Overview
 Eliminates Barriers for Engineering Students to Study Abroad
 Course Equivalency and Credit Transfer
 Courses in English
 Engineering Programs accredited
 Annual Members Meeting
 Share Best Practices
 Network
 Learn what is new in Engineering Education
 Member Universities
 20 countries represented around the world,
 34 in the U.S., 31 outside the U.S.
 Offering a breadth of engineering programs and disciplines
 Locations that are attractive for both U.S. and international
students
