Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the program, a person must meet the general requirements for admission set out in the
College Education Regulations, as well as the following special conditions, where applicable:
 Hold a valid RN Québec nursing license from OIIQ or
 Hold a valid LPN Québec nursing license from OIIAQ or
 Graduate Nurse with a CPN permit (Candidate to the profession of nursing) and eligibility to write the
Quebec licensing exam
 Current BLS-C
 Meet the Health & Immunization requirements for hospital practice

Course #1: Introduction to Perioperative Nursing
30 hours of lecture, 15 hours laboratory

The first course of the program will introduce patient-centered care in the perioperative setting. It will define
the scope of practice of both the RN and the LPN according to the “entente sur la nature des actes posés par les
infirmières durant une intervention chirurgicale” adopted September in 2011 by the OIIQ and October 2011 by
the College des médecins. It will explore the perioperative role of both the scrub and circulating nurse as
identified in the ORNAC Standards, patient safety issues, and ethical, legal and moral obligations. It will also
explore concepts basic to ambulatory surgery
Course #2: Prevention and control of infections
15 hours of lecture, 30 hours laboratory
Course Number: 180-OR2-AB
Students will be introduced to the principles of asepsis, sterilization, disinfection and infection prevention
through the implementation of perioperative nursing care standards. They will learn basic technical skills
necessary to prepare themselves and the patient for a surgical procedure.
Course #3: Intraoperative nursing and surgical technologies
30 hours of lecture, 30 hours laboratory
Course Number: 180-OR3-AB
Surgical procedures will be discussed in relation to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, required equipment
and supplies, wound healing. Students will learn how to identify, arrange, use and care for surgical
instruments and accessory surgical equipment. Students will learn to safely prepare and handle supplies for
surgical wound closure, perform a surgical count, and manage surgical specimens. Emphasis will be placed on
the safety practices and elements of surgical suite management.
Course #4: Interdisciplinary approach to patient care
15 hours of lecture, 30 hours laboratory
Course Number: 180-OR4-AB
Emphasis is placed on the provision of safe, individualized patient-focused care and the utilization of effective
communication skills within a multi-disciplinary team. Students will study the principles of post-anesthesia
nursing care and the anesthetic's effect on various types of patients. Students will focus on the nursing actions
to be performed by the scrub and circulating nurse during surgical procedures and emergencies.
Course #5A: Clinical Integration
15 hours of lecture, 150 hours of clinical for LPNs

Under the supervision of a perioperative nurse preceptor, the LPN perioperative student will focus on the role
of the scrub nurse during surgical procedures and the specialized care requirements of pediatric, geriatric and
morbidly obese patients.
Course #5B: Clinical Integration
Course Number: 180-OR6-AB
15 hours of lecture, 225 hours of clinical for RNs
Under the supervision of a perioperative nurse preceptor, the RN perioperative student will focus on the role
of the nurse in the preoperative setting and nursing actions to be performed by the scrub and circulating nurse
during surgical procedures and the specialized care requirements of pediatric, geriatric and morbidly obese
patients. It includes a few days in the pre-operative clinic and Post-Anesthesia Care (PACU)
