Former Boot Camp Experiences
“Many people come into HIV prevention with a ton of passion and commitment.
Public Health Boot Camp is a terrific way to give them the skills they need to
harness all that passion to do the most good for their community.”
--Dan Wohlfeiler, Chief of Office of Policy and Communication of the California
Department of Public Health STD Control Branch, Public Health Boot Camp Presenter
“Since attending the program, I have transitioned from the Manager of the HIV
hotline and Manager of HIV Testing and Prevention to becoming the director of
both of those programs. The Public Health Boot Camp has played a critical role
in that transition and in my life both inside and outside of work. PHBC helped me
build the immense amount of organizational skills and managerial skills I
required to deal with the rapid growth that our agency has been experiencing.”
--Jill Dispenza, Director of the HIV Hotline and Director of HIV Testing &
Prevention at Center on Halsted, 2008 Public Health Fellow

Former Boot Camp Experiences
“As a social worker by trade, the program has benefited me providing an
academic, public health perspective to the work that I do. It gave me multiple
different viewpoints and ideas for approaching supportive housing work. It
helped me see work through these different lenses and to better understand
HIV from an epidemiological perspective.”
--Dave Thomas, Director of Supportive Housing for the AIDS Foundation
of Chicago, 2008 Public Health Fellow
“AFC’s Public Health Boot Camp gave me the opportunity to gain and apply
key public health principles to a real world challenge. The Boot Camp provided
the space and information critical to developing a thoughtful action plan that
would mobilize diverse community support for female condoms in Chicago. The
basic outline borne out of the intense week laid the foundation for the creation
of a citywide coalition of community organizations dedicated to expanding
awareness, access, and use of female condoms.”
--Jessica Terlikowski, Director of the Chicago Female Condom Campaign
with AIDS Foundation of Chicago, 2008 Public Health Boot Camp
