CTE Part-Time Districtwide Course Descriptions Automotive Services Technician: A series of 4 courses leading to industry certifications. The Automotive Services Technology program prepares students to gain employment and become competitive in the automotive services industry. Instruction will be provided in the diagnosis of automotive systems and service and repair procedures. This program will be recognized and sponsored in part by the Automotive Youth Education System (AYES) which is comprised of many large automobile manufacturers and supported by automotive dealers throughout the United States. Following completion of the program, students will be eligible to test for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications and many either directly enter the workforce or pursue postsecondary education and/or training. Over the next ten years, more than 1/3 million Information Technology (IT) positions will become available in the United States for those with solid technical skills and industry recognized certifications and credentials. These positions typically pay well and the work is challenging and exciting. The Information Technology program will help to prepare students to become successful and competitive in the high-tech Information Technology industry. As the program develops, students will receive training in A+ Certification, Cisco Certification (CCNA), Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and Microsoft Certified Solution Developer. The course will train students to measure and record vital signs, provide personal care and hygiene, position, transfer and ambulate, provide unit care, and other activities of daily living. CPR and First Aid will be included. The training will enable students to work in long term care and acute care facilities. Training will include both classroom activities and clinical experiences with industry partners in hospitals, nursing homes and extended care facilities. This course is a three-hour block and, in accordance with State of Alaska regulations, includes supervised clinical experience. Students complete all components of classroom content with cumulative score of 70% in order to continue onto the industry site clinical experiences. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered each semester for periods 1-3 (am) or 5-7 (pm) Construction Trades: The mission of the Mat-Su Construction Trade, two-year program is to prepare students to enter the workforce, union training programs, trade school or college to prepare for careers in Interior Design, Construction Trades, Architecture and related fields. Industry awareness and technical instruction will be provided in Health and Safety, Tool Safety, Blueprint Reading, Design, Site Selection, Technical Math, Framing, Finishing, Plumbing and Heating, Interior and Exterior Finish, Real Estate, Business and Wiring. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered in the Fall, during periods 1&2 CTE Part-Time Districtwide Course Descriptions EMT: Emergency Medical Technician 1 (Basic) is designed to help students gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be competent, productive members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team. The EMT Basic National Standard Curriculum Educational Model is followed. Students who take Emergency Medical Technician 1 (Basic) have varied goals: work as an EMT on an ambulance, fire department, or first responder service, work as an EMT for a business, gain medical knowledge and skills for use in very remote areas, use on a resume for further schooling in the medical field or on a resume for employment, help care better for elderly or sick family members, or simply to gain the confidence to deal with emergency situations. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Fall periods 1&2 (with ETT) Emergency Communications – Dispatch: This course introduces students to the technologies involved in emergency communications. Students will learn call processing, telephony, computer aided dispatch and radio communication techniques. Students will learn the fundamentals of the Incident Command System as it relates to emergency communications. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Spring Periods 1&2 Emergency Management Systems – Incident Command: This course introduces students to the emergency management process. Students learn how the functions of emergency management operate in response to disasters and other emergencies. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered in the Fall or Spring periods 6&7 ETT: This class is an introduction to emergency medical care. Students will learn to provide assessment and care as a first responder to medical emergencies, illness, or injuries. This level of training is the next step beyond initial first aid. Students will learn the duties, limitations, and care techniques required of a certified ETT. This class will meet the required 40 hour training for ETT state certification. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Spring Semester CTE Part-Time Districtwide Course Descriptions Introduction to Fitness Professions: Introduces exercise physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology in regards to sport and safe exercise. Prescription and Assessment of exercise for both individuals and groups will be covered. Students will explore careers and professional development opportunities in the sports and fitness industry. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Fall Semester periods 6&7 Introduction to Pharmacology: Introduces students to how drugs are organized by classifications that include their purpose, side effects, cautions, and interactions. Instruction will include lectures, labs, guest speakers, and field trips. This class is recommended to students interested in health careers such as nursing and medicine. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered in the Fall periods 1&2, or Spring periods 6&7 Medical Assistant: The Medical Assistant course will prepare students to assist doctors with clinical and administrative duties. Assistants greatly increase the efficiency in a medical office and are valuable members of a medical office team. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered in the Fall during periods 1&2 Medical Terminology: A year-long course that presents medical terminology through a combination of anatomy and physiology, word building principles, and phonetic “sound like” pronunciations. Content is organized according to body systems and is designed to prepare students who have interest in careers in health care or medicine. This course will help anyone going into a medical field, providing necessary information and skills for success. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Fall periods 6&7 or Spring periods 1&2 CTE Part-Time Districtwide Course Descriptions Outdoor Power Equipment Technology: Instruction will be provided in the diagnosis of fuel and electrical systems and service and repair procedures. In addition, students are to receive a foundation in theoretical aspects of major outdoor/industrial powered-equipment systems. Examples of serviceable equipment include All Terrain Vehicles, Blowers, Bush Cutters, Diesel Engines, Lawn Tractors, Gas Engines, Power Mowers, Personal Watercraft, Snowmobiles, etc. Following completion of the program, students will be eligible to test for certifications and may either directly enter the workforce or pursue post-secondary education and/or training. Location: Colony High School Sequence of courses: OPET 1 (2 credits) Year-long course periods 6&7 OPET 2 (2 credits) Year-long course periods 6&7 Physiology of Exercise & Fitness: This course introduces anatomy, physiology, and injuries most commonly encountered on the athletic field, gymnasium, or sports arena. Techniques used in the initial management and rehabilitation of those injuries are also covered. This course is recommended for students interested in fitness and sports medicine. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Spring periods 6&7 Private Pilot Ground School: This course is designed to be “hands-on”, covering the basic elements of Professional Piloting, Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Administration. This class will prepare students to pass the FAA knowledge test. Process Technology is an environment of teams of people responsible for planning, analyzing, and controlling the production of products specifically as it relates to the Alaska Oil and Gas Industry. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Fall periods 1&2 Veterinary Assistant: The Veterinary Assistant course will introduce students to careers in Veterinary science. Veterinary Assistants assist in a Veterinary office with a variety of tasks to increase the efficiency of the office. Location: Career & Technical High School Offered Fall or Spring periods 6&7 CTE Part-Time Districtwide Course Descriptions Welding: A series of 2 courses leading to industry certifications. This course covers the theory and basic foundation of welding to include safety and health, tools and equipment (handling and care of), shield metal arc welding, oxygen-acetylene welding, and oxygen-acetylene cutting. These courses also cover general techniques in gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and plasma arc cutting. Employability information, metallurgy, blue print reading, welding symbols and weld testing are also included.
