Dimensions of Differentiation Depth Complexity Novelty Acceleration TUSD GATE curriculum is structured around iconic teaching which means that our teachers utilize icons or symbols, which represent the different aspects of depth and complexity. Depth and Complexity What is Differentiation? Dimensions of Differentiation Depth – the concept of challenging learners by enabling them to venture further and deeper into an area of study. Complexity – refers to the concept of broadening the learners understanding of the area by asking them to make connections. Novelty – gaining understanding of an area under study or constructing meaning of knowledge in an individualized manner. Acceleration – the concept of altering the pace or speed of learning. Depth and Complexity What is Differentiation? Differentiated instruction is how each teacher modifies the core curriculum and designs strategies to address the unique needs of all students and not just identified gifted students. • Differentiation is based on the state content standards at each grade. • Differentiation should be integrated into what you already teach and not be considered something more. Depth and Complexity Depth and Complexity Icons Presentations & Samples Icon Presentation Create a generalization or statement that best defines a principle or theory in order to identify the main concept or theme. Big Ideas Depth and Complexity For Example: Star Wars By George Lucas • One of the big ideas in Star Wars is good vs. evil. Big Ideas • Star Wars movies teach such lessons as the value of loyalty, the importance of being true to and trusting in one's self, and the merit of hope. Depth and Complexity Icon Presentations Details Providing evidence to support an idea, describing parts, attributes, and/or variables as they relate to a specific topic. Deciding the relevant versus irrelevant details. Depth and Complexity For Example: Alice in Wonderland By Lewis Carroll • Alice falls down a rabbit hole. Details • Alice can’t find her way back home. • Alice angers the Queen of Hearts and is attacked by playing cards. • Alice wake up and realizes the whole adventure was a dream. Depth and Complexity Icon Presentations Identify repeated events necessary to predict future events or understand patterns of the past. Patterns represent a specific set of events. Patterns Depth and Complexity For Example: The Three Little Pigs By James Orchard Halliwell-Phillips Patterns • One of the patterns in the story of The Three Little Pigs is that the wolf huffs and puffs and blows the different houses down. • Another pattern is the element of three (3) that is always in a fairy tale (3 pigs, 3 houses, etc). Depth and Complexity Icon Presentation Unanswered Questions Identify discrepancies, missing parts, and/or incomplete or unclear ideas. Asking questions that will add clarity to the topic. What do I still want to know? Depth and Complexity For Example: Harry Potter By J.K. Rowling Unanswered Questions • What will happen to the other characters? • Will there be a new evil nemesis for Harry’s kids to battle? • Will there be another book? Depth and Complexity Icon Presentations Use and understanding of the specialized vocabulary, tools, skills or tasks associated with people working within a discipline. Language of the Discipline Depth and Complexity For Example: Mathematics 3-D Geometry Language of the Discipline Vertex Face Angle Edge Depth and Complexity Icon Presentations Describe the structure, order, hierarchy of events that underlie the actions or events. Explain the guidelines affecting the situation. Rules Depth and Complexity For Example: Subtraction Rules Rules of Subtraction • You start subtracting in the column furthest right. • If the number on top is smaller than the bottom, you need to go a place to the left and regroup. • You cannot subtract a bigger number from a smaller number without using negative numbers. Depth and Complexity Icon Presentation Define and describe opposing viewpoints, how different people and/or characters see a certain event or situation. Multiple Perspectives Depth and Complexity For Example: Charlotte’s Web Charlotte vs. Templeton Multiple Perspectives Charlotte wants to help Wilbur because she cares for him. She does not want Wilbur to die because he is like a son to her. Templeton wants to help because is greedy and will exchange favors for food rewards. He does not want him to die because that would cut off a vital food supply. Depth and Complexity Icon Presentation Debate the points of view, different opinions or ethical issues affecting the topic. Ethics Depth and Complexity For Example: Two Days in May By Harriet Peck Taylor Ethics Is it okay for Animal Control to kill animals that have left their own habitat and are a nuisance to humans? Depth and Complexity Icon Presentation Describe the relationship of ideas or events between the past, present, and future, and note how time has affected the information. Changes Over Time Depth and Complexity For Example: Changes Over Time • Judge with criteria the effect of the Gold Rush on the state of California? • How does the relationship between Fern and Wilbur change as Fern gets older? • How are he ideas related between the past, present, and future? Depth and Complexity Icon Presentations Trends Relate contemporary issues to events in the recent past in order to predict and understand how an action has affected the outcome of events. Trends represent a general sense of events. Depth and Complexity For Example: Popular Trends In America Trends • Fashion: Bellbottoms are a trend. They keep coming back, but are slightly different each time. • Social: After 9/11 Americans were more eager to display the flag. They even had them waving from car windows. • Health: Diets Depth and Complexity Icon Presentation Study one topic in all subject areas. Interdisciplinary Relationships Depth and Complexity For Example: Interdisciplinary Relationships • What systems do math and music have in common? • Where do you see rules in spelling? • Where do you see rules in math? • Where do you see rules in our classroom? Academic disciplines are branches of learning or scholarly instruction in which degrees may be earned at the college or university level. Disciplinarians teach, conduct research and publish their findings in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. They may also be experts in an applied field, where they use their expertise to perform specialized tasks rather than conduct basic research. Many disciplinarians have expertise and collaborate with others in different disciplines. Fields of study usually have several sub- Unit of Study Geology/Rocks & Minerals Geologist: Looks at origin, composition and location: conducts chemical tests Archaeologist: Looks at how rocks were used as tools; conducts simulations, tests theories Anthropologist: Looks at how rocks were used as religious ornaments; compares new artifacts with with other evidence previously found.
