Drivers We Need Your Help With the cold weather upon us, we are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of families using the “Kiss and Ride” located at the front of the school. Every day at 9:05, teachers are on duty ready to supervise your children as they quickly and safely exit your vehicle and then walk along the pathway to the rear of the school. During this process, you may remain in your car. We understand that there are a lot of cars using these lanes and we ask for your patience and understanding during this time. We also ask that you continue to respect the guidance of the teachers on duty and move your vehicles forward to unload the children. Unfortunately, we have had a number of situations which have almost resulted in accidents as a result of drivers not adhering to school guidelines. At the end of the day, a staff member escorts all “kiss and ride” students to the front of the school. As you pull up to the school, using the designated lane, your child will be able to meet you without delay. Again, there is no need for you to leave your vehicle. We are sure that you would agree that student safety is most important! Thank you for helping us to make Westervelts Corners a safe learning environment for all of our students! Student Attendance Please note that the school starts at 9:20 every day. It is important that all students are in class, prepared to learn at the start of the school day. We know: If students are not in their class at 9:20, they are late! Students miss important social time with their peers before schools begins Students feel embarrassed or self-conscious Late arrivals can disrupt the routine of the classroom A last-minute rush can be stressful for the child, and might get them to school in the wrong frame of mind Missing five or ten minutes of the day can make it harder for the students to understand the materials being taught Frequent absenteeism leads to gaps in a child’s skills and knowledge base, and can cause the child to fall behind their peers and hurt their self-esteem Parents, you can support your child by ensuring that you bring your children, on time, every day to school. If school is cancelled due to weather, announcements will be made on the board website, on the radio and on the local news. If schools are open, and busses are running, it is important that your child comes to school, on time! We thank you for your support! Bus cancellation & closing schools due to bad weather During the winter months, we may need to cancel buses or close schools because of inclement weather. Listen to the radio for updates. Information regarding details of cancellations or closures will be announced on radio and television stations listed below and posted at www.peelschools.org and www.stopr.ca. Information will also be available on Twitter @Peelschools, Facebook at www.facebook.com/peelschools or by calling 905-890-1010 or 1-800-668-1146. Winter is Here! We encourage outdoor time as much and as often as possible as it is important for your child(ren)’s health and development to get regular fresh air and exercise – and it’s a lot of fun to play in the snow! Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for that day’s weather before they leave home. Coats, mitts, toques, scarfs, and proper footwear are necessary. In regards to indoor recess, we make decisions at each individual recess time based on Environment Canada weather reports and current existing conditions at the school, and will have indoor recess when the weather is extremely cold outside. Please make sure that your child’s clothing and footwear are marked with his/her name, as there are numerous students who have the same color and make of clothing/footwear. Thank You!
