Diameter Inter Operability Test Suites
(draft-fajardo-dime-interop-test-suite-00.txt)
V. Fajardo, A. McNamee, J. Bournelle and
H. Tschofenig
IETF65 DIME WG
General Notes:
• Document is a set of test cases and provides
guidelines, it does not provide test plans
• Document does not re-state what is already
mandated in a particular specification
– Test cases provides references to specifications
• Provides recommended topologies for test cases
– Topologies are design to test multiple cases with
multiple participants (In the interest of time)
– Topologies are not mandated
IETF65 DIME WG
General Notes Con’td:
• Test cases attempts to exercise the most
common/necessary functionality
• Test cases are generalized.
– Correctness and conformance is emphasized only in
the context of peer interaction
• Detailed behavior encroaching in the
implementation specifics is left to the testers
• End-to-end and/or Hop-by-hop security is left to
the testers to exercise

Brief Overview – Application Coverage:
•
•
•
•
Base Protocol
Credit Control
SIP
3GPP - currently only Cx, Sh and Rf. Maybe Ro will
be added if there is interest
• EAP
• NASREQ
• MIP
IETF65 DIME WG
Brief Overview – Base Protocol
• Base protocol concentrates on connectivity and
peering
 Capabilities exchange, request/answer routing,
failover/failback, loop detection etc.
 More topology setup required for connectivity and routing test
• Some agent tests can overlap with other application
tests
• Proxies may require additional topology setup but can
also overlap with some applications
• Session maintenance can be done along with
application testing
IETF65 DIME WG
Brief Overview – Application Coverage
• CC and SIP/3GPP will probably be the most
implemented
 Some test cases emphasizes message exchanges
 Test cases are more extensive
• Test topologies maybe less important – verification
maybe more localized to end peers (i.e. verification of
balance checks, direct-debit, refunds etc)
• Simulation of service elements (nas, sip servers, app
servers etc) are left to the testers
IETF65 DIME WG
Brief Overview – Application Coverage
• EAP and NASREQ has simpler topologies.
Limited number of participants per topology
• EAP methods left up to test pairs to agree
upon
• Simulation of access elements (ppp clients
etc) are left to the testers
IETF65 DIME WG
Brief Overview – Application Coverage
• MIPv4 test cases emphasize different
deployment scenarios - require more effort in
topology setup to simulate different
registration schemes
• Much of the details in terms of accounting is
left to the test participants to verify
• Same with authentication and authorization
schemes
IETF65 DIME WG
Reviews
• Only one extensive review so far
• Review limited mostly to Base protocol and
CC
