Departmental Course Syllabus
I.
Course Catalog Description
This three-hour credit course provides strategies and tools to help students meet the expectations of the PRAXIS I,
a three-part state exam, required as part of the qualifying and certification process for pre-education students. It
consists of three modular sections: Mathematics, reading, and Writing. In addition, students will be provided
with standardized test-taking strategies. A practice PRAXIS I test will be administered at the conclusion of the
course.

Course Overview:
This course is designed for those entering a teacher-training program. The 45–hour sessions will help one prepare
for the PRAXIS Exam. In addition to practice and skill improvement, the course will cover the following specific
skills: Reading - main ideas, supporting details, author’s purpose, inferences, generalizations, conclusions, and
word meanings; Writing - grammar and essay development, organization, transitions, specific examples, sentence
types and structure, punctuation and work variety; and Mathematics - arithmetic, elementary algebra, basic
geometry, measurement, and graph and chart reading.

Course Rationale:
This course includes 15 - hours of explicit instruction and hands-on practice for the most problematic content
areas of the PRAXIS I test. The instruction will provide strategies to improve reading comprehension, time
management, and test taking skills. In addition, one will become aware of the essay writing dangers that can
reduce one’s score, learn strategies to write an effective PRAXIS I essay in 30 minutes or less, apply specific
techniques to solve the most frequent and difficult mathematical concepts, and determine one’s grammar
proficiency to help focus study time and energy.
After completing the 15 hours of instruction, there will be a diagnostic evaluation in each module. An individual
review plan will be established and tutoring will be planned to help in particular areas of weakness. At the end of
these tutoring sessions, students will be better prepared to take the PRAXIS I exam.

PRAXIS Math Module
This module will focus on assisting students to review key concepts of mathematics, problem solving, reasoning, and
estimating as required for the certification process for professional educators. Number sense and operation sense,
mathematical relationships, data interpretation, geometry and measurement, and reasoning will be emphasized.
Learning Plus Handbook for Mathematics from Educational Testing Services will be used to supplement the computer
module.

PRAXIS Writing Module
The module reviews grammar, usage and mechanics. A review of the writing process from prewriting to editing will be
provided. Students will learn techniques for producing a written response under pressure of a testing situation.
The students will be given the grammar review booklet Write Right which helps them review for all sections of the
Writing component of the PRAXIS I test.

PRAXIS I Tutoring
One-on-one tutoring designed to review the most important concepts needed to pass the PRAXIS I test. In addition, the
instructor will review student work to determine areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Hence, instruction
emphasizes guided practice of reading, writing, and math concepts needed to improve upon and practice the most.
