2. The skills I have acquired so far are: ethics & tolerance skills, continual learning, critical thinking, research and investigation skills, integrity, problem solving, and conflict removal. These skills can be transferred from school work to a job and will help me in the future as a NICU R.N.

3. The skills I will be focusing on in the next year is ‘Human Relations and

Interpersonal Skills

’. Currently my communication skills are weak. I often stay to myself and don’t speak up. If I want to become a neonatal intensive care unit nurse I need to develop these skills in order to maximize my work performance. I will need to communicate effectively to my future co-workers as well as the parents of the babies. I will need to have very good interpersonal communication skills in dealing with parents of a sick baby. In order to achieve these combined skills I will set up goals within the next year with increasing difficulty and detail.

I will begin in three weeks, when I will become more involved in group activities, either in or outside of school to develop some communication/interpersonal skills in group work. Next I will wait for three more weeks to research the communication dynamic of nurses working in hospitals. By understanding how they communicate difficult issues I will better understand how I will need to communicate in the hospital.

In four months I will begin volunteering at a hospital to get a better understanding of the interpersonal skills needed, personal experience will help more than just research. Although it is very unlikely that I would be able to volunteer in the NICU, the experience I would gain will help me learn. In six months I will apply the skills I observed and developed in daily life to help strengthen what I have of the interpersonal skill. In about eight to nine months I should be preforming the skill regularly. By the end of the year I will evaluate what I have learned and what I can improve to help me succeed in my future career.

Map:

• In 3 weeks-

Become involved in group/leadership activity’s

• In 6 weeks- explore/research the teamwork/ communication skills of NICU nurses.

• In 4 months- volunteer at a hospital to get a better understanding of the team work and how to effectively communicate in a hospital setting.

• In 6 months- apply the skills I have seen, in everyday activities and challenges, like in school or in home life.

• In 9 months- should be preforming new skill regularly.

12 th month/end- Evaluate what I learned and what I can improve to help me succeed in my future career.

4. One skill I already have focused on in my life is, continual learning. My education has allowed me to develop continual learning from elementary school to high school and now in college. By constantly challenging myself with the increasing difficulty of each grade my learning skills developed even more. As I have learned from my mother, nurses never stop learning. Throughout their career they have to adapt to new technology, medicine, and treatments to provide the best possible care for their patients. I will to constantly challenge yourself to work harder and more efficiently. This skill is important because by strengthening my knowledge and performance I will be able to give the best possible treatment. Continual learning especially as a nurse will help me provide the best treatment I can.
