UNI Biology Department Outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of genetics from molecules through populations.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy, development, and physiology of
cells and organisms.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of biodiversity and the relationship of living things
with their environment and with each other over time.
4. Demonstrate and understanding of evolution, including mechanisms, evolutionary
history, and evolutionary theory.
5. Employ logical reasoning and scientific methodology to ask and answer questions
about the biological world.
6. Collect, organize, analyze and interpret data.
7. Critically read and evaluate primary and secondary research literature.
8. Evaluate current issues and ethical topics in biology.
9. Use biological terms, concepts, and graphical representations properly in written
and oral communications.
10. Construct written documents in standard scientific style, including proper citation
of other’s work.
11. Procure and present biological data and information using a variety of appropriate
methods.
2
Recommendations of the Biology Student Outcomes
Assessment (SOA) Committee:
1. This is a reform that the Biology department needs to adopt as a method for
improving curriculum and student learning, not simply a bean-counting activity to
satiate upper administration.
2. Any data collected for the purposes of SOA will not be used for promotion,
tenure, or annual performance (either punitive or beneficial).
3. Skills attained during the core sequence will be assessed through a pre/post exam
approved by the core instructors.
a. New students should attend a 1st year orientation (to be held prior to the
first day of the semester) where they will be given the skills assessment.
b. At the end of the core sequence, students will take the skills assessment
again to be used in a pre/post comparison.
i. In order to assure that students take the test, the post test may be
used as a pre-requisite for upper-level courses.
c. Transfer students will also take the skills assessment, in part, to get an idea
of skills being developed at previous schools.
4. Skills attained during upper-level courses will be assessed through collections of
representative student work, including, if applicable, class averages on said
assignments/exam questions.
5. Syllabi from each course should include any of the 12 agreed-upon biology
outcomes they meet.
6. Regular program meetings should occur to discuss/update changes as necessary.
