Parents Children Bridging the gap of knowledge around the internet The Gulf of Internet Knowledge THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY • Improves teaching and learning • Allows us to access material when and where we like • Can be used to create amazing things • Needs to be used responsibly A connected world Today …connecting everyone Dangers of the Internet • Paedophiles use the internet to meet young people • People lying to others online • Bullying using the internet (Cyber bullying) • Seeing inappropriate images and material • Viruses and pop ups • Personal Information Cyber-bullying What it is: Use of the Internet and related technology to harm others What to look for: • Texts or emails that you find hurtful • Posts on social networking sites What to do: • Bullying of any kind is not tolerated at Sandwell Academy • Do not reply to bullying messages • Always report bullying Online grooming What it is: Using the internet to manipulate and gain trust as a first step towards abuse Always be alert to cyber strangers – they are not always easy to spot • VIDEO Online grooming What to look for: • Messages from strangers • Friends of friends • Invitations to meet What to do: • Only talk online with people you know in real life • If suspicious, report it Things to watch out for Here are some common signs of grooming that you should be aware of. It doesn’t mean that your child is being groomed, but signs to look out for if you’re worried: • Excessive use of the computer • Aggressive behaviour regarding internet usage • Secretive behaviour • Change in use of sexual language Identity theft What it is: When personal details are stolen and used fraudulently By piecing together information about you from the internet, thieves can: – open bank accounts – make purchases – pretend to be you! Identity theft What to look for : • Emails requesting usernames and passwords • Websites seeking excessive information What to do: • Change your passwords frequently • Restrict giving out information • Be careful when following links in emails Would you put this on walls around Sandwell ? Sexting What is sexting?
