I have no idea where each class left off – so just ask them. Remind them that they can get extra credit by answering 10 movie questions. Details for this are in Focus. Should you run out of movie and have extra class time, instruct students to do some AR reading. If they are without a book they may choose from their short story list (see handout). Before starting Selma movie, please do the following. 1. Tell students to retrieve their writing folders & get some helpers to pass back graded work. Poems and any short answer efforts need to go in writing folders TODAY, not at some more convenient time – then put folders back in the file cabinet. 2. Pass out REVISED Policy/Procedure handout – notice the changes to AR. Flip it over and see the AR Short-Story List. These titles are sprinkled throughout the 4 textbooks @ my.hrw.com OR can likely be found with the help of GOOGLE. 3. Pass out Lunch Bunch handout (Tutoring Schedule) – anyone wanting to attend Thursday 1/22 needs to complete the appropriate packet prior or access it online through the textbook. Students who attend can earn 30 extra points on a daily grade. Printed packets in the bookcase under the flags. Thanks for subbing. I hope all the classes receive glowing reviews! Shmoop.com reports that his young-adult novel “opens up discussions on some of the toughest topics out there – rape, depression, suicidal tendencies, and eating disorders.” Even though this book has been part of standard curriculum in American schools, Speak repeatedly appears on banned and challenged book lists. I agree wholeheartedly with K. Imani Tennyson’s book review that “Speak is a powerful novel that needs to be read by teenagers trying to navigate their changing world as they leave childhood and become adults, including the ugliness that comes with it.” Figure out which persuasive appeals are being used. Yes, open your book and look at THAT chart. Affirmative – Share the novel 1. Lucy Coats (rape victim) quote supporting book 2. Author testimonial – reason why she wrote the book 3. Noms & Awards Ethos/Credibility Negative – Ban the novel 1. Missouri professor picks apart all the dysfunction in the book, page by page, line by line. 2. Dr. Swier – “it’s child porn and 8th graders who read it are akin to child abuse.” 3. Are there other books who share the same crime as Speak, that have been challenged or banned? 4. Challenge cases that sighted in your favor? 5. This book could protect your child 6. Dr. Richard Swier and Wesley Scoggins – can you discredit either? 7. Florida Middle School 4. Challenge cases where Speak was actually banned? 5. The book could abuse your child 6. Can you discredit the author, or anyone who supports the book? 7. Florida Middle School 8. (Period 1) Quindlen thinks children will benefit from a week or two of “exploring the insides of their own heads” because it helps kids to become creative thinkers. She believes boredom fuels creativity and that “you can’t write poetry, or compose music, or become an actor without downtime, and plenty of it.” Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistene Chapel; and perhaps he was inspired by looking into the heavens? (Period 2---only class to use different evidence, still a 2 score) Quindlen thinks children will benefit from a week or two “exploring the insides of their own heads” because it can give them time to contemplate on the meaning of life. “There is ample psychological research that suggests humans do their best thinking when they are doing nothing.” Imagine someone like Ghandi sitting under a tree, listening to nature, and so not thinking about soccer practice. (Period 4) Quindlen thinks that children will benefit from “exploring the inside of their own heads” for a week or two because a little downtime fuels creativity. “There is also ample psychological research that by doing nothing is when human beings actually do their best thinking.” Da Vinci must have had a ton of downtime because he is known for seriously, creative swag. For your convenience I have put your STAAR English I scores in the grade book (unweighted) which means they are just there for show. Passing score was 3750 (or higher) and a commended score was 4691 (or higher). A perfect score was 6966. Some of you were soooo close to commended; if only you would have had a few more essay points. (:-P) Under the assignment Objective #4, I have put your Expository Essay score from last spring/summer. Many of you are failing this objective; therefore anyone with an Objective #4 score that is less than 75% must do the SCA#3 and write the Expository Essay. If you are struggling with expository, persuasive writing won’t be any easier, and guess what essay we are writing next week? Anyone with a 75% or higher for Object #4 is exempt from the SCA#3 and will get an automatic 10 point bump. Hmmm, why is passing so mediocre? o Dear “Mom & Dad” letter on the back of your AR Student Record Report. Due 10/14/See template below. Dear Mom & Dad (guardian name), I just wanted to give you a heads up on my report-card grade for English – it’s a ______. This number comes from computing all the grades/percentages as documented in FOCUS. A significant grading factor (20%) was Accelerated Reader, and you can see my direct efforts/results concerning this contributor of my grade. In the 2nd paragraph, explain specifically how you are either going to improve or maintain your grade. Give concrete examples: more AR, attend Lunch Bunch, turn-in work on time & completely, etc. (write persuasively). Mrs. Oswalt is graciously encouraging all students with a SEVERE AR deficiency from First Six Weeks to earn back points during Second Six Weeks. Of course I’m still expected to meet the requirements outlined in the syllabus, but thanks to her generosity, I have the chance to double down and reap an extra-credit windfall. This is just the kind of damage control to rescue my semester average and keep it afloat. So if I read/quiz my brain off in October, then my lovely English teacher will adjust my grade in December. Let me explain how retroactive “fairy dust” works. 1. First Six Weeks grade = 66 (or you could insert your current grade) 2. Second Six Weeks grade = 108 (come up with a number then do the math for step 3) 3. First Six Weeks grade gets adjusted to 74 while Second Six Weeks grade goes on the books at 100 VERY IMPORTANT: Please sign next to my name on the front of my Student Record Report to acknowledge that you have read this letter so that I may take advantage of this “gimme grade.” With your support and encouragement, I know that I can make you proud at Progress Reports. Hugs & Kisses (or whatever salutation you like), Print your name and sign above Date that you signed this contract October 9 & 10 Turn In/Grade 2.1 Critical Reading Workshop (see October 3 & 6) 2.2 Book Check – bring AR reading material.
