The Southern Colonies
The Virginia Colony
The Virginia Colony was founded in 1607.It was lead by Captain
John Smith. The Virginia Colony went there because they wanted
money. The settlers were from England. The Virginia colony's
major industry was agriculture. They used to grow wheat and
tobacco. The colony’s major cities are Jamestown, Williamsburg,
and Richmond .
The Maryland Colony
The Maryland Colony was founded in 1632. It
was lead by Lord Baltimore. The settlers were
from England. They came there because of
poverty in England. All of the Maryland Colony
was catholic. They liked to grow tobacco.
The North Carolina Colony
• The North Carolina Colony was founded in
1584 by Sir Walter. The settlers were from
England. The settlers came there because they
wanted freedom. It was the first colony that
lived permanently. The settlers called the land
that they landed on Roanoke.
The South Carolina Colony
• The South Carolina Colony was founded in
1663 by King Charleston. The settlers were
from England. They wanted religious freedom.
• The South Carolina and the North Carolina
colonies settled together. They loved to grow
rice, tobacco, and cotton.
The Georgia Colony
• The Georgia Colony was founded in 1732 by
King George II. The settlers were from
England. They wanted freedom. Most of the
people there were Catholics and Christians.
The colonists hoped to make silk there but
their venture failed.
The Middle Colonies
The New York Colony
• The New York colony was founded in 1664 by the Duke of
York. They came to America because it had good soil and the
Hudson River.
• They came from England. The New York Colony was
completely taken over by the English in 1674. The New York
Colony began the fur trade with the Native Americans.
The New Jersey Colony
• The New Jersey Colony was founded in 1664 by Lord
Berkeley. They were from England. They came to
America because they needed money and religious
freedom. Their Major Industry was lumbering. Their
major cities were Trenton and Princeton.
The Pennsylvania Colony
• The Pennsylvania Colony was founded in 1681 by
William Penn. The Colonists were from Sweden. The
colonists were almost all Quakers. The Quakers came
to America because they wanted a safe haven.
Pennsylvania’s major industry was Agriculture.
The Delaware Colony
• The Delaware colony was founded in 1638, by Henry
Hudson. The colonists were from Sweden, The
Netherlands, and England. Most of their jobs were
lumbering, ironworks, and fishing. They made money
by agriculture. The Delaware Colony moved to
America to get land and for freedom.
The New England Colonies
The Massachusetts Colony
• The Massachusetts Colony was founded in 1629 by
John Winthrop. They wanted religious freedom.
They were from England. Some major cities in the
Massachusetts Colony are Boston, Quincy, and
Plymouth. The colony used to do lumbering and
fishing.
The New Hampshire Colony
• The New Hampshire Colony was founded in 1623 by John
Mason. People moved there because they wanted
freedom and better farmland. The settlers were from
England. New Hampshire’s major cities are Concord. They
worked by fishing, growing potatoes, and ship building.
The Connecticut Colony
• The Connecticut Colony was founded in 1636 by
Thomas Hooker. People moved there because it was a
prosperous colony and it had a variety of jobs. They
were from England. The Connecticut Colony’s major
cities were Hartford and New Haven. They mostly
earned money by agriculture and fishing.
The Rhode Island Colony
• The Rhode Island Colony was founded in 1636 by Roger
Williams. They came to America because they wanted
religious freedom. The settlers were from England.
Rhode Island’s major city is Providence. The major jobs
are agriculture and lumbering.
