What is the Advanced Placement (AP)
Program
The program allows high school students to take
college-level courses and exams and to earn
college credit while still in high school.
The Advanced Placement Program is a
collaborative effort among motivated students,
dedicated teachers, and committed high schools,
districts, college/universities, and the College
Board.
The program consists of two parts
 The course
 The exam
Who should be involved in AP classes?
College bound students
Students who want a challenging academic
program
Students who want a challenge in certain
disciplines
What are the academic benefits of AP?
Learn the subject in greater depth
Develop analytical reasoning skills
Form disciplined study habits
Gain confidence by meeting the challenges of
college level course
Gain experience of college level work within the
support of the high school environment
What are the academic benefits of AP?
 Many college and universities award credit for
completion of a test score of three or higher. Each
college/university sets policy for AP exam credit. To
check each institution:
www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy
College Admission counselors look for AP courses on
student transcripts. The rigorous course work improves
a student’s chance of acceptance.
Students may be granted up to a full year’s worth of
credit by a college/university upon completion of a
number of AP Programs. This saves students and
families thousands of dollars.
http://www.collegeboards.com/ap for additional AP
information
What are the AP Exams?
AP Programs include courses of study which
culminate with a nationally coordinated exam.
AP Exams are prepared by the College Board
Development Committees.
Most AP exams consist of a multiple-choice section
and free-response section
Studio Art exams are based on a portfolio
Exams are typically three hours in length
Exam fees are set by the College Board. The fee for
2015 was $89 per exam. Actual cost to the student is
reduced dependent on state and district subsidiary.
Exams are given in May on a prescribed national
schedule.
How are exams graded and
scores reported?
Exams are graded by college professors and
AP teachers using college level standards.
Each AP Exam grade is weighted combination
of the student’s score on the multiple-choice
section and on the free-response section.
The final grade is reported on a 5-point scale:
5=extremely well, 4=well qualified, 3=qualified,
2=possibly qualified, 1=no recommendation
Exams scores are sent in July to the student,
the student’s high school, and chosen colleges.
