Fry Word Challenge At Home Practice Parents should spend 5-10 minutes every day on the Fry word challenge practice with their child. This can be in one sitting or divided up. It can vary between practice with folders and racing the clock practice. Practice with lists: Your child gets out the starting list. Once your child has been tested at school, he/she usually knows what list he/she is working on. A parent can lead child in echo reading the list (I read, you read). Read the entire list, starting at the top and working down each column. Make sure your child touches directly below each word (finger or pencil eraser) while reading with their eyes. You can vary with different voices (mouse/tiny voice, lion/booming voice, etc.), fast reading/slow motion, choral reading (together), child reads on own, etc. Race the Clock: The goal is to read each list of 100 words (starting from last word and go backwards) with 100% accuracy in two minutes. Once your child knows the words automatically (without sounding out or hesitation), time him/her. Make it a fun game. Encourage your child to beat his/her best time and read all words correctly within the two minutes. Other ideas: Write words on index cards. Use as flashcards to practice words. Place flashcards with words all around home in a path for child to hop and read words. Use word lists as a writing strategy or personal dictionary to help with spelling. Goals: All RES second grade students will fluently read 500 words in two minutes per list by the end of the year. All RES third-fifth grade students will fluently read 1,000 words in two minutes per list by the end of the year. All second and third Spanish Immersion students will practice the Spanish High Frequency words and meet the goal set by their teacher.
