AP Biology Summer Assignment 1. Read chapters 50-54 and use the following as guidelines to take notes/make outlines for yourself, these will be checked as a homework grade. Chapter 50 – Introduction to Ecology and the Biosphere - What is the study of ecology? - What are the levels of ecology that we study? - List and describe the abiotic factors of ecology. - List the biolmes and their defining characteristics Use pgs 1036-1038, 1044-1047 for help Chapter 51 – Behavioral Biology - How does behavioral biology emphasize “Science as a process” - Describe animal “learning” - What is animal cognition - What does an animals social behavior have to do with biology? Chapter 52 – Population Ecology - What is the characteristics of a population? - Skip Life History Traits and Population growth models. - What are limiting factors and how do they effect populations? Why can the human population growth not continue indefinitely? Chapter 53 – Community Ecology - How do different species populations interact with one another? - How do communities interact within themselves? - What is disturbance within in community? - What does biogeography have to do with community biology? Chapter 54 – Ecosystems - Know what a trophic level is. - Describe energy flow and how energy is lost - What are the biogeochemical cycles and describe them? - How do we (humans) impact ecosystems? 2. Create a food web diagram to depict the energy flow through an ecosystem. This can be on construction paper or on a computer printout. (homework grade) 3. There will be a 25-question quiz when we return that first week of school. This is all very necessary so we can keep on tract for the remainder of the school year. We will be doing our first quiz, lab and test all within the first two weeks we are back!
