Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church 24 Tate Street Lebanon, VA 24266 Our Mission: “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” (276) 889-2721 Wil Cantrell, Pastor June 2013 New Starts Now “Behold I am doing a new thing.” -Isaiah 43:19 Last Sunday, as many of us gathered in the high school gym for graduation, we were all reminded that God is doing a new thing in the lives of the graduates. No matter whether they go to college or to work, whether they stay in town or move out of the country, their future will not be like the past. A new chapter in life has begun. There is no going back. There is no denying it. When we look outside, we can see that just a few short weeks after the last freeze, summer has arrived. Our air conditioners are on. We have dug out the sunscreen from the medicine cabinet. And now we all have to figure out how to find the time to mow the lawn and tend the garden each week. It is obvious as soon as we step out the door that a new season has arrived. At church this year, there have been plenty of new things: new faces, new members, new carpet, and new life. Every Thursday night at Recovery at Lebanon, we share a message we all need to hear: “New life can start now!” As I’ve officiated a number of weddings this year, it occurs to me that in every wedding sermon I write I am basically saying the same thing: “From now on until you die, everything is fundamentally different about your life because of what you are doing today. Welcome to a new life in a new family.” Many times new things are easy to celebrate and enjoy: like weddings and graduations. Sometimes, though, new things come up that we do not choose. A new chapter begins in our lives without our permission. We graduate from college, but there’s no job waiting for us. We are ready to enjoy life until the doctor tells us about a worrisome spot that appeared on an X-Ray. We really like how life used to be, but it is not going to be that way anymore. In times when we celebrate new seasons of life and when new seasons come our way that we never wanted, it is important to remember that God is the one who is making all things new. Right after God says he is doing a new thing in Isaiah 43:19, we read these words: “I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Whether you are beginning an exciting new season in life or whether you are beginning a new chapter in your life that you hoped would never be written, rest assured God is beginning it with you. God, in fact, is working through the newness to shape your soul in his own image so that you might be able to enjoy His love and learn to love like Him. If this all seems like wishful thinking that it is too good to be true, all I can tell you is that so do streams in a wasteland, God becoming human, and a man coming back from the grave. As we enter into the new, we always do so surrounded by the love that is from of old. We can face the new with confidence because we are held in the palm of the hand of the eternal unchanging God. We need about 5 adults as volunteers to set up and take down the movie screen, be monitors and help with serving food. If you would like to help, please contact Sarah. We are looking for some church folks to help us out with Youth Talks on Sunday evenings. If anyone is interested in giving a 10-15 minute talk, as well as share a short testimony, please let Sarah know. We can help you with the material for talk if needed. This is a great way to get to know our youth better and to give them a chance to get to know you. Those that participated last year really enjoyed doing it. Please prayerfully consider working with the youth in this way. If you have a deep desire or passion for working with youth and would like to get involved, please see Sarah or Wil to discuss ways to serve in this capacity. Vacation Bible School – July 22nd-26th We’re getting ready to ROCK!!! Kingdom Rock is fast approaching and once again we want to kick it off with a potluck picnic after the 11:00 service on Sunday, July 21st. Britt Keene will prepare his famous barbecue and the church will furnish the bread and drinks – just bring your favorite dish to share. We’ll eat around 12:30 to give everyone time to get there. We plan to have games and a special surprise for the kids, so please join us. If you have any questions, please call Diana in the church office, or Doni Herndon (889-1675). Please put it on your calendar – hope to see you there! The Staff PPR Task Force Team will meet on Monday and Tuesday, June 3rd and 4th in the library from 6:30 – 9:30 pm.
