NOTES- PART OF YOUR EXIT TICKET
 Greenhouse Effect:
 Sun Heats Earth (Radiation)
 Heat from Earth travels back to atmosphere.
 Greenhouse gases trap some heat.
 Heats the Earth

Misconceptions;
It is a good thing- natural process. (Balances Earth’s Temp)
 It is not the building that houses plants.

Greenhouse Gases
 Water Vapour
 Carbon Dioxide
 People/Animals exhale it.
 Plants absorb to live.
 Volcanoes produce
 Methane
 Comes from cattle
 Rice Paddies
• Nitrous Oxide
• Plants die
• Ozone
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
 AKA- Global Warming
 More on this later- but……………

CFCs
Chloroflourocarbons
 Aerosols
 Fridges
 Foam plastic
 Small amounts- trap lots of heat!!!!

EXIT TICKET QUESTION
 Explain the greenhouse effect. The following words:
sun, greenhouse gases, heat, travel(s)- must be used
correctly. You may use them more than once. Please
underline the words.




Sun
Greenhouse gases
Heat
Travel(s)
Bell Ringer
 Put the following sentences in the correct order to
explain the greenhouse effect:

Greenhouse gases trap some of this radiation which travels
back to Earth.
The sun’s radiation travels through the atmosphere.
Infrared radiation travels back into the atmosphere.
This then helps warm the Earth naturally and is known as the
greenhouse effect.
Some of the sun’s radiation is absorbed and heats the Earth.

YOU MUST WRITE THEM DOWN!



EXIT TICKET
 List three things you have heard about the ozone that
you feel could be true.
Know This for MASTERY QUESTION 1

The sun’s radiation travels through the atmosphere.
Some of the sun’s radiation is absorbed and heats the Earth.
Infrared radiation travels back into the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases trap some of this radiation which travels
back to Earth. This then helps warm the Earth naturally and is
known as the greenhouse effect.
Bell Ringer -Ozone
 Write the number down for only the sentences that are true:
1.The ozone layer is a greenhouse gas.
2.It is man made.
3.It protects us from UV rays from the sun.
4.It is made of carbon and oxygen.
5.It is made of three small oxygen atoms.
6.CFCs destroy ozone.
7.The largest hole in the ozone layer is at the equator.
8.The largest hole in the ozone layer is at the south pole.
9. The ozone layer is a layer of the atmosphere.
10. Destruction of the ozone layer can disrupt the food chain.
11. A well running air conditioner leaks CFCs.
Mastery Question 2:
 The ozone layer is the layer of the atmosphere that
protects us from the sun’s UV rays. It is made of 3
oxygen atoms, and can be destroyed by CFCs. The
largest hole in the ozone is over the south pole. If we
keep destroying the ozone the food chain could be
affected.
Causes of Global Warming
