Big Idea 2 – Cellular Respiration and/or Photosynthesis Lab Proposal and Write Up
Goal: Design and implement a lab that evaluates how an abiotic factor affects the rate of
reaction for the cellular process of cellular respiration or photosynthesis.
Requirements for all labs:


Proposals and procedures are to be pre-approved (Tues rough, Wed. revised)
Complete lab write up due one week after lab is complete – individual write-ups only

Labs are not equal in regards to level of sophistication and depth of knowledge/application,
therefore, the grades will be weighted accordingly. The following is a list of lab ideas to get your
group started. As a class we have developed our skill and technique with some of the
suggestions, others will require that your group go above and beyond what we have already
done – thus the weighting of grades.
1)
“Float like a Leaf Disk, Sting like a Syringe ”
Leaf Disk Buoyancy Method to measure rate of
photosynthesis
36 max points total
2) “Crickets be Cranky”
Sparkvue and Carbon Dioxide probe to measure rate of
cellular respiration of crickets
1) “At Least it’s Yeast”
54 max points total
Sparkvue and gas pressure sensor to measure rate of
cellular respiration of yeast
2) “Color me Crazy for DPIP”
Sparkvue and colorimeter to measure rate of photosynthesis
1) Original lab to measure rate of cellular respiration and
photosynthesis - not based on one provided or modeled by
other scientists.
72 max points total
2) Bromothymol Blue Balance Challenge
 Use BtB to determine the rate of photosynthesis of an aquatic
plant and the rate of cellular respiration for an aquatic animal
(snail, goldfish, etc.)
 Use BtB and apply data to create a balanced closed jar
system between the aquatic plant and animal. (24 hr
balanced cycle required)
