Hire me! Employer Expectations Overview Students will learn gain self-knowledge about choosing career pathways and employer expectations to gain employable. Objectives Students will be able to: • Evaluate their skills, values and interests to help select a career pathway through one of the 16 Career Clusters from the National Government. • Understand employer expectations • Be aware of how social media and early behavior choices can cause barriers to employability. • Understand how the interview process works. Power point (http://www.jaonline.org/volunteer-teaching-tools) Presentation Introduction – 2 minutes Greet Students. Tell them your name, describe your job, and provide some information about your background. Explain that you are a volunteer with Junior Achievement, an organization dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy. First Activity – 10 minutes Use information from Session 1 to help students understand how important it is to find a career that matches your skills, values and interests. JA of East Central Ohio | More training resources @ www.jaonline.org/support-andvolunteer 1 Have students spend about 5 minutes taking the self-assessment on Page 2 of the handout and to circle a career they may be interested in on Page 3 of handout. In groups of 4-5, have them approach the World of Work poster at the front of the room, and using a yellow sticky tab, mark their career choices. Leave all the stickers on the poster to tabulate at the end of class. Evaluate and make some observations about popular choices chosen by the class. If a career is not on the poster (ie professional athlete!) ask them to think about a second choice should them become injured. Second Activity – 15 minutes Present the Hire me! Power Point. Access the power point through Junior Achievement’s Website, www.jaonline.org The value add of Junior Achievement is the business volunteers personal experiences to highlight information presented in the powerpoint about employer expectations and how to help yourself stand out as middle school students transition to interview for scholarships, try out for sports teams or leadership positions in club activities or apply for their first job. On the homepage click Support & Volunteer Then click Volunteer Teaching tools The link to the Hire me! Power Point will be listed. Click on the link and it should open to the desktop.
