•Essentials of Photosynthesis and Respiration December •Science Fair Update 7-8, 2009 •Make the Connection between Photo & Respiration •Active Lab involving Respiration •Work to be done at Home Warm Up – What do we know? Diagnostic – 5 Stars • What is photosynthesis? • What is respiration? • What do you need for these processes to occur? – Ingredients? End products? Chemicals? Formula’s? • How are they related? Essential Concepts: Photosynthesis and Respiration 1. Understand how cells get their energy 2. Explain in your own words what photosynthesis means 3. Write the “ingredients” and “final products” of photosynthesis in words and chemical formulas 4. Describe the RESPIRATION process 5. Illustrate the cycle in which ENERGY flows between plants and animals in nature 6. Understand that mass IS conserved in nature Photosynthesis Four Ingredients needed - Chloroplasts - part of a plant cell that capture sun’s energy - Sun – Energy reaches the Earth - Carbon Dioxide – CO2 - gas in the air – enters plant through the stomata - Water (H2O) from the soil Photosynthesis Two PRODUCTS (end up with) • A sugar called GLUCOSE symbol = C6H12O6 • Oxygen gas (O2) (waste product) EQUATION that Describes PHOTOSYNTHESIS 6 H2O + 6 CO2 + Sun Energy + Chloroplasts C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 waters + 6 carbon dioxides will make 1 sugar molecule and 6 oxygen molecules Introduction to Respiration Process in which animals CONVERT stored energy in sugars to put to use for living (movement etc) • • Need 2 things Oxygen and Sugar Results in Energy and Carbon Dioxide and Water Respiration 6 O2 + C6 H12O6 Energy for use + 6 CO2 + 6 H2O Journal Entry • What ingredients do you need to have photosynthesis occur? • What are the results (Products) if photosynthesis can occur • Write word and chemical formula answers Photosynthesis and Respiration Assignments Due Monday Photosynthesis Questions • #1 and #2 + Job Qualification (page 48) Respiration Questions • Page 53 # 1 (a,b,c,d) and #2 (a,b,c) Due Next Wednesday • Drawing that shows relationship between Photosynthesis and respiration • (see next slide for details) Illustrate the Process • Develop a Poster that represents the Photosynthesis and Respiration Cycle • Criteria: – Show the connection between the Sun, plants and animals. – Include names and Chemical formulas for each “ingredient” or “product” – Properly “Name” each step of the process – Include how many of each “part” are required to make the process work Is it a good Learning Tool? ____ /10 Show the connection between the Sun, plants and animals _____ /5 Include names and Chemical formulas for each “ingredient” or “product” _____ /5 Properly “Name” each step of the process Include how many of each “part” are required to make the process work Overall Pride in your work _____ /3 _____ /7 _____ /5 Photosynthesis and Respiration Assessment Use as much detail as possible to clearly answer the following prompt: 1. Support the statement that “Photosynthesis and Respiration are involved in a cycle that must exist for life to survive on Earth” Need to add chemical formulas and quantities to this template The Cycle Photosynthesis occurs Energy from Sun – Helps plant Water and CO2 used for Photosynthesis Product of Respiration – animals healthy and happy Product of Photosynthesis (plant happy and growing) Chloroplasts capture suns energy Water and Carbon Dioxide Sugars and Oxygen Use Sugars and Oxygen to Respire Waste Products are Respiration – Energy released for Demo to get kids thinking 1. Make observations of the solution in the beaker? 2. What will happen when Mr. Blank drinks the solution? 3. What will happen if Mr. Blank blows through the straw into the solution? 4. Conduct Demo 5. Record observations and try to explain it. Explain BTB • Indicator that changes color based on pH • Carbon Dioxide is an acid • Adding Carbon Dioxide changed the pH of the solution • Blue if pH>6.8 • Clear/Yellow if pH < 6.8 BTB is a tool for our lab • • • • • • • • • • • • Turn to page 54 Read problem statement as a class Make a hypothesis (write in journal) Discuss as a class on how we could do this experiment What is a controlled experiment? Volunteers (up to 4 students) Need timers (involve as many as possible) Need Recorder of data Activity – Suggestions? Safe? Conduct Experiment Every student write down observations and data table Write up your class lab results based on the following slide (Handout to each student) • Work hard and we’ll finish this in class on Thursday – Ms. Ryan will judge due date Exhaling Carbon Dioxide Lab page 54 • Lab Write-Up – Problem Statement – Hypothesis (Statement answering Part 2 #5 question) – Materials and Procedures (in your own words) – Data • Drawing showing colors of beakers • Any time measurements explained – Results • Answer Analyze and Conclude # 1,2,3,4 – Conclusion • Answer Analyze and Conclude Problem # 5 and develop an experiment to answer “More to Explore” - -You will not be conducting the test Lab – Class Collects Data together Student Time it took to change color (no exercise) 14.86 seconds Time to change after exercise #3 11.36 seconds 10.72 seconds 7.24 seconds 14.6 seconds 10.92 sec #4 23 seconds 17 seconds #1 #2 Lab – Class Collects Data together Student Time it took to change color (no exercise) Time to change after exercise #A Sophie 12.99 yrs old Trumpet 7.55 5.0 #B Jaelynn 12.5 Flute 8.24 4.68 #C Max B Sings 13.1 6.68 4.0 #D Mitchell 8.2 13.2 Trumpet 4.6 Exhaling Carbon Dioxide Lab page 54 • Lab Write-Up – Problem Statement – Hypothesis (Statement answering Part 2 #5 question) – Materials and Procedures (in your own words) – Data • Drawing showing colors of beakers • Data table – Results • Answer Analyze and Conclude # 1,2,3,4 – Conclusion • Answer Analyze and Conclude Problem # 5 and develop an experiment to answer “More to Explore” - -You will not be conducting the test Homework • Photosynthesis – Question 1 – Question 2 – Job Qualification • Respiration Questions
