see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance. But Bruno longs
to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than
meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life
and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship

After the death of his beloved older brother Hector in World War I, sixteen-year-old

The year of the hangman
Set against the backdrop of the inescapable horror of the fourteenth-century plague and
medieval heroism and chivalry, THE FIRST VIAL details the morbid reality of a time when
the Black Death forced people to take the law into their own hands to survive the wave of
chaos that was ushered in. Katherine, Lady of Crenfeld Castle, pits her wits against the
enemies trying to take over her castle. After surviving two attempts on her life by a landhungry priest, she is forced to leave her castle just as the plague engulfs her village
Although marketed as a juvenile novel, Gary Blackwood’s The Year of the Hangman is a
straight forward alternate history of the years following a failed American Revolution.
Blackwood does not try to do too much with the result being that what he does comes
across as well thought out and concise. Blackwood’s hero, Creighton Brown is the ne’erdo-well son of a British hero, Henry Brown, who was killed in a battle with rebels
following the suppression of the revolt. Creighton’s mother, no longer able to control her
son, arranges for him to be sent to the colonies where her brother, Colonel Gower, can
turn him into a proper British gentleman

Animal Farm
Charles Dickens's great historical novel, set against the violent upheaval
of the French Revolution.
Classic novel by a Nobel prize winner about a group of boys who, after a
plane crash, set up a primitive society on an uninhabited island.
Mr Jones of Manor Farm is so lazy and drunken that one day he forgets
to feed his livestock. The ensuing rebellion under the leadership of the
pigs Napoleon and Wellington leads to the animals taking over the farm.
Vowing to eliminate the terrible inequities of the farmyard, the renamed
Animal Farm is organized to benefit all who walk on four legs. But as
time passes, the ideals of the rebellion are corrupted, then forgotten.
And something new and unexpected emerges.
James Gatz from North Dakota reinvents himself as the self assured and
wealthy Jay Gatsby as he tries to win the love of his childhood
sweetheart Daisy Buchanan. Set in the Jazz Age of the 1920s, Gatsby and
his friends are blinded by the glitz and glamour of wealth and learn too
late of its inability to bring them true happiness. Author F. Scott
Fitzgerald’s greatest novel is a classic study of the Gilded Age and one
man’s corrupted view of the American dream.
Best friends Lennie and George travel from farm to farm in California
looking for work while trying to avoid trouble. Although both men are
good workers and have dreams of owning their own farm, they never
stay at one job long because of Lennie. Lennie is a simple minded gentle
giant who doesn’t know his own strength and often gets into trouble.
When tragedy strikes, George must make an awful decision that will
alter the plans he and Lennie have made for their future. This is a classic
Steinbeck story about migrant workers and the downtrodden surviving
the Great Depression.

Madonna who presides over their household.
Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone
older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and
searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you
sound advice to help you make your way through it. Mitch Albom had
that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the
older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his
study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled
relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live.
Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together,
through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.
Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has
undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older
sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since
childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was
conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she
has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning
to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always
been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that
for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart
and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.
They tell me I'm lucky to have a son who's so verbal, who is blisteringly
intelligent, who can take apart the busted microwave and have it
working again an hour later. They think there is no greater hell than
having a son who is locked in his own world, unaware that there's a
wider one to explore. But try having a son who is locked in his own
world, and still wants to make a connection. A son who tries to be like
everyone else, but truly doesn't know how. Jacob Hunt is a teenage boy
with Asperger's Syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or
expressing himself well to others, and like many kids with AS, Jacob has
a special focus on one subject--in his case, forensic analysis. He's always
showing up at crime scenes, thanks to the police scanner he keeps in his
room, and telling the cops what they need to do…and he's usually right.
But then one day his tutor is found dead, and the police come to
question him..
The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of
animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his
family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo
ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks.
Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an
orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal
tiger.

If I Stay
When high school student Clay Jenkins receives a box in the mail
containing 13 cassette tapes recorded by his classmate Hannah, who
committed suicide, he spends a bewildering and heartbreaking night
crisscrossing their town, listening to Hannah's voice recount the events
leading up to her death.
After a family tragedy, Jacob feels compelled to explore an abandoned
orphanage on an island off the coast of Wales, discovering that the
children once kept there — including his own grandfather — may have
been dangerous, and may be still alive.
Seventeen-year-old Mia is in a coma after a terrible car accident that
killed her parents. Awakening, she has no memory of the accident, and
must put her life back together piece by piece — and decide what to do
with it.
