For tomorrow’s test you are responsible for: Vocabulary A las siete, yo (cuando el despertador soño) me despierto. Me baño Me acuesto temprano (early) o tarde (late) Also for tomorrow’s test you are responsible for conjugation and meaning of reflexive verbs!!! When is a verb reflexive? A verb is reflexive when the giver of the action is also receiving the action. TO CONJUGATE A REFLEXIVE VERB: Despertarse (ie)—to wake up Me despierto nos despertamos Te despiertas Se despierta se despiertan A reflexive verb takes TWO parts---First a? reflexive pronoun! Then a properly conjugated verb!!! Remember that there are some stem changers in this section!!! Be able to conjugate those. You will need to be able to tell whether it is reflexive or not by the sentence: Remember “a” is a personal a if you have a plus another person it is not reflexive!! Ex. Yo me divierto mucho en la fiesta. (I enjoyed myself (entertained myself) at the party) María divierta mucho a sus amigos. María entertained her friends a lot. If you are doing something to another person you will see “a” plus a person or persons name. Ex: Yo despierto a mi mamá. I wake my mom. You may also see a THING as the direct object. Yo me arreglo el pelo. I fix my hair. Ella arregla la cama. She arranges/fixes the bed. REMEMBER: You have a couple of verbs that mean something entirely different if they are reflexive: Yo me divierto en la fiesta. I enjoyed myself at the party (divertir—to entertain/divert someones attention) Elena diverta a sus amigos. Elena entertains her friends. (See the “a” to another person!!) The quiz we took and reviewed on this is an EXCELLENT PLACE TO STUDY HINT HINT HINT!!! Look at the sentences HINT HINT HINT!!!! MEANINGS WILL BE THE SAME HINT HINT HINT!!! You will also be responsible for ser and estar. You will be choosing for now only between characteristic and condition or origin and location. Our next unit will also deal with ser and estar so I have modified this section and made it much shorter for our test. Characteristic—it describes the person (normally) EXAMPLES PLEASE!! Bajo, alto moreno (physical) bonito etc. Character trait-simpático perezoso ambicioso etc. SER GOES WITH CHARACTERISTICS!! Estar goes with conditions or feelings: Physical conditions—enfermo—sick cansado—tired Emotions/feelings—triste—sad; entusiasmado—excited/enthusiastic Nervioso-nervous etc! On this section again look for ones we normally use BUT BE CAREFUL TO ASK YOURSELF WHO OR WHAT IS… MOST of the ones missed on your quiz were for format NOT for meaning! As you look over your quiz the first grade was what you would have had if you didn’t mess up any of the people/things EXAMPLE: Tu pulsera __es__ de oro. Origin--- de + a place or colombiano etc. (de dónde—from where!) Location: en + a place “Dónde” or lots of directional words EXAMPLES? Cerca de—close to; lejos de—far from; alrededor de—around; aquí; a la derecha de The last thing you will be responsible for on this test is dealing with possessive adjectives—possessive adjectives have to agree in two different ways. 1—CHOOSE THE BOX IN THE CHART BY The person who owns the item! 2—MAKE IT MATCH IN NUMBER AND GENDER TO the item(s) owned Mío, mía, míos, mías nuestro/a/os/as Tuyo/a/os/as Suyo/a/os/as suyo/a/os/as EXAMPLES: Yo tengo un libro de María. Es su libro. YES, es __suyo__. Es mi libro. NO, no es __tuyo__. Es el libro de Marío y yo. Es __nuestro___ I know that it is quite difficult to back up and take a test that we have spread out this much. I have MODIFIED THE TEST… This does not mean that you don’t need to study/review. It means that I am taking into account that it has been a while and that I am asking you to take the burden of review mainly on yourself. I will use wordbanks and things of this nature. HOWEVER!!!! It will include all concepts and you will need to recognize and be able to actually use all the vocabulary!!! Don’t neglect to study!!! I will be here early in the morning if you need help or have questions!
