WR Doug Baldwin
December 17, 2015
(On how much of the noise he ignores and how much he processes) “That was a very well-phrased
question. Do you listen to the noise? Depends on your definition of listen. I think everybody hears it, it’s
kind of hard to not hear it, especially being in this business. I don’t know. You hear it and I’d be lying if I
said it didn’t affect me to some degree at some point in my career. At the same time, I’ve got a job to do.
I’m just focused on that, trying to be as consistent as I can.”
(On that being an effective motivational tool) “I don’t know what you’re talking about. No. I’m just, like I
said, trying to be as consistent as I can. I think I’ve been blessed with as many targets in the last four
games as I’ve seen in any stretch in my career. I’m just trying to be as efficient as I can when I get those
opportunities.”
(On the increase in touchdowns is related to opportunities, not playing differently) “I go back to three
years ago, prior to when we won the Super Bowl. I remember talking to Chris Carter on ESPN, talking
about how, if you look at the numbers, we’re the most efficient receiving corps. I remember saying it last
year to Deon [Sanders], if you look at the numbers, we’re the most efficient receiving corps. Again, if you
look at it, this year again we’re the most efficient receiving corps. Really, nothing has changed. We just
get more opportunities. Obviously, if you get more opportunities you have more opportunities to do
something with those chances. For us, we’re getting more targets.”
(On what goes into running routes so well that cornerbacks fall) “Great preparation, great scouting report.
Great work within the game. On that specific play, Jermaine Kearse had come up to me and told me
earlier in the game about a tendency he was seeing from the defensive backs that we were going against
on the outside. I just utilized that knowledge, put together a game plan for that specific play and it worked
out for us.”
(On what the key was on that play) “It was a well-executed play.”
(On if he thought he had both feet in bounds on the catch in the end zone) “I felt like I did. When the ball
was in the air, I was going to body catch it at first because I felt the defensive back close, and I wanted to
protect it. Once I realized how close I was to the sideline, I just went up and tried to make a play on it. I
felt like I did get both feet in bounds, you could tell by my reaction once I landed. Unfortunately, we
didn’t get a good look at it in the review.”
(On if he told Carroll to throw the flag) “I said something to him about it, but he was very adamant. He
thought that I was pushed out of bounds.”
(On if he was a little emotional after one of his scores) “Happy, maybe.”
(On the historical value of his last three games) “I’ve looked at it. It doesn’t really mean much to me at
this point. We’re trying to get to another Super Bowl. I was going to focus on one game at a time. Like I
said, my job here is just to help my team the best way that I can. Yes, blessed with the targets, the success
that I’ve had the last couple games, but to me this is all about leveraging that success to help my team the
best way that I can and helping the young guys along, and serving my team as best as I can.”
(On how validated he feels) “I kind of gave up on y’all a long time ago. I kind of gave up on the critics
last year. It is what it is. People have their opinions. Doesn’t necessarily make it right or wrong. At the
end of the day, you’ve got to focus on you. Control what you can control and be the best you can be.
That’s really all I’m focusing on right now.”
(On when he gave that up last year) “Probably after the Super Bowl.”
(On if Tyler Lockett’s play is helping him) “I think we all, yeah. He’s a phenomenal talent, he does so
much for us offensively. He’s very versatile. We can put him in a number of different positions. He
attracts attention. It’s not just Tyler, don’t get me wrong, Tyler’s a phenomenal player. We’ve got
Jermaine Kearse, Luke Willson, all these guys that can make plays for us, that have continuously made
plays for us. It’s all hand in hand. It’s a collective effort.”
(On what’s impressed him most about Tyler Lockett) “His mindset. His mental approach to the game is
probably what impresses me most, because the situation that receivers are placed in here. He’ll tell you,
he came from a system where he would get the ball at least 12 times a game, to this, where we don’t have
as many opportunities. He’s done very well with it. He’s been able to be poised in those situations. He
doesn’t allow the game to get bigger than what it is, he just keeps his nose to the grind and continues to
work. To me, that’s the most impressive thing.”
(On if there’s anything specific that’s improved his connection with Russell Wilson) “I don’t know. I
really can’t say. I look at the tape and Russell’s doing everything right. It’s fun to watch, it’s like a video
game. All of it goes into it, our offensive line is playing extremely well as well. A lot of things go into it.”
(On what he thought when he dropped a pass after 124 consecutive catches) “I mean, honestly, I couldn’t
care less. Obviously, you want that ball, but you’ve got to go onto the next play. It’s like dang, all right.
Next play. You have to forget about it. If you let it linger in your mind, it’s going to affect the next play
and then the next play. I had to let it go.”
(On the difference between being where they were and where they are) “Every team is close, I would say.
Everybody has a lot of talent on their team. It’s just about putting it all together and going in the right
direction. For a long time, we were very close offensively, but we just didn’t execute up to the standards
that we’d set. Now we’re doing it. We were always close, but close doesn’t really mean anything if you
don’t put it together.”
(On Mike Pettine saying that Russell Wilson was right below the elite level) “I’m sure it was brought up
to him a number of times. You guys probably wouldn’t leave him alone about it. What do I think about it?
I don’t think anything about it. It’s one man’s opinion. It is what it is. Russell Wilson’s going to continue
to play on Sundays and we’ll see what happens when it’s all said and done.”
(On what it is about the team that allows them to succeed through adversity) “It’s the joy that we have for
each other. I think about when Kam Chancellor went down last game, he was on the sideline, he’s right
next to me when the offense is out there playing on the field. It’s the support that we have for each other.
If a talented guy goes down, the next guy that’s going in, he doesn’t want to let down the guy that he’s
playing for. He doesn’t want to let down the guys that’s playing across from him. We have a
responsibility to each other to A) hold each other accountable, but to also, B) perform at a standard that
we expect from each other. I think that’s what has allowed us to be successful in every situation.”
(On if they’ve voted for Pro Bowl) “We did.”
(On what being selected to go would mean to him) “It’s a huge honor. I would be blessed to be selected at
the Pro Bowl, but my plans are to not be able to participate in it. Like I said, one game at a time. We’re
focused on the season. If that happens, I’m more than happy, more than blessed to be in that situation, but
I’m worried about the season right now.”
