Gray Wolves – In Language Arts class we are
reading Where the Red Fern Grows, and
completing several activities which relate to
this novel. These activities include learning
about the author Wilson Rawls, discovering the
characteristic and habits of redbone hounds,
and finally how to overcome problems by
evaluating possible solutions. In English class
we are currently studying the different types of

adjectives. We will soon be finishing up our
SRI Testing for the year. The students will be
able to see how they have increased their
reading vocabulary and comprehension
throughout this school year. In Math we are
finishing chapter 10 on Surface Area and
Volume. Our test will be Monday May
4th. We will then start chapter 11 on Measures
of Variation. As usual, math help is always
available during period 4. In Social Studies we
just started learning about Mexico. The
students made beautiful maps showing
Mexico’s physical features and we are now
learning about the different types of climates.
Soon we will learn about the different cultures
in Mexico. In Science class we are busy
learning how to use microscopes, and
observing microscopic organisms. The
students are also finishing their 3D Animal and
Plant Cell Projects.
Red Phoenix – SOTM- Congratulations to our
Students of the Month- Margaret (Maggie) L.
(106) and Devin H. (106). These two students
have shown outstanding leadership for the Red
Phoenix Team. In LA/RD: We are currently in
the middle of our third theme, “Growing-Up”.
Students are busy reading about different
challenges of growing up in various
environments. In Science: We are continuing
with our study of the Diversity of
Life. Students have learned about cells,
creating a 3D Cell, and working with
Microscopes. We will be beginning Part 2 of
the Diversity of Life Unit. At the end of the
Diversity of Life Part 2 Unit there will be a
Unit Test. Then we will begin to explore space
for the remainder of the school year. In Social
Studies: We are in the middle of Chapter 5
(Mexico). We spent some time focusing on the
importance of cause and effect relationships in
history. Our next Unit will continue to focus on
Middle America and the Caribbean. The
students will learn about the climates of the
Caribbean, cultural influences and
developments, and political/governmental
issues facing this region. In Math: Chapter 10How is shape important when measuring a
figure? We will be exploring the volume and
surface area of rectangular and triangular
prisms. In chapter 11, we will be working with
statistical measurements.
Blue Dolphins – Congratulations to the Blue
Dolphin Students of the Month: Lindsay A. and
Katherine L. In Science we have started using
microscopes to explore life while learning all
about cells. After Diversity of Life, we will
finish the year with Solar System and Earth. In
Mrs. Klick’s Language Arts we are continuing
on in Theme 3. Once we finish Theme 3, we
will end the year with Maniac McGee novel.
For grammar and writing we are moving on to
adjectives and will begin our research paper the
second week of May. In math we are learning
about prisms and pyramids. We will be
calculating the volume and surface area of
these shapes. The next chapter deals with
statistics and probability. In Mr. Neagley's
Language Arts class we are in the process of
reading the novel "Tuck Everlasting." The
students will have a research paper to write in
the near future. For grammar we will be
starting to learn about adjectives. In Social
Studies we are soon wrapping up Canada, and
will begin exploring Mexico. In Miss
Hostetler's Language Arts class, students are
reading the novels Phantom Tollbooth and
Tuck Everlasting. At the end of the school year
they will be creating novel newspapers in
groups which will revolve entirely around the
characters, setting and events in the novel. We
will also be continuing with Theme 3 and
adjectives until then.
Red Raptors – The Red Raptors would like to
congratulate Ronnie M and Raechel B for being
selected as our April Students of the Month! In
Science class, we have finished our unit on
Ecosystems and Interactions by watching the
movie "Medicine Man". Our last unit of the
year will be starting soon. Look forward to
learning all about Energy! In English class, we
will be starting a career research project that
will culminate with an oral presentation and
PowerPoint. In Pre-Algebra, we will be
finishing our series solving equations &
inequalities that have the variable on both
sides. Next, we will do doing a chapter on
solving and graphing linear equations. In
World History, we will study The Middle Ages
and The Renaissance time periods to close out
the year. The students will be experiencing
what it would be like to be a knight, lord of the
manor, and peasant back then. They will also
research a famous person from the time period
and create a mock Facebook profile for
them. The students will be creating models of
medieval castles, villages, and jousting
tournaments as a project. We are looking for
donations of empty paper towel and toilet paper

Gold Stars – In Mr. Dougherty's classes we are
selling Roman goods and presenting them to
the great Julius Caesar! The winners will be
honored with a festival. Next, we learn about
the Middle Ages. The rise of Charlemagne, the
chivalry of knights, the raids of the Vikings,
and a new age of learning comes to life in room
504. In Pre-Algebra, students are solving
equations with multiple steps. This includes
solving equations with variables on both sides,
solving equations with grouping symbols, and
solving inequalities with multiple steps. In the
next unit, we will be learning about functions,
linear functions, graphing, slope, slopeintercept form, and representing linear
functions. Academic Literacy, students are
reading Bulu, African Wonder Dog by Dick
Houston. Students are very engaged in this
novel and most are near to the end. Students
will then create a poster combining information
learned about Africa, Jack Russell Terriers and
the book's author Dick Houston from the book
itself and a web quest. The Gold Stars are
finishing the year by reading historical fiction
novels. They will research the time period that
their books are based on and present their
findings to the class.
Green Clovers – The students of the month for
the Green Clovers are Patrick S. and Aleah Z.
Eight graders spent the day at Hershey Park for
“Math Day” on May 1. Thanks to all
parents/grandparents who helped by serving as
chaperones. In Responding to Reading, the
students have completed their reading skills
review and successfully completed another year
of Pennsylvania School
Assessments. Currently, we are applying those
reading skills learned throughout the school
year as we discover people and events from the
United States civil rights movement by reading
the award winning novel, ‘Watsons Go To
Birmingham-1963’. The novel opens up
discussion about civil rights from the past and
offers an opportunity to make comparisons and
connections to modern day civil rights
issues. In Algebra, the students started a unit
on factoring and are preparing for the Algebra
Keystone Exam which will be on May 13th and
14th. In Geometry, the students are learning
about properties of circles, and in Intro to
Algebra class, the students are learning to solve
and graph inequalities. In English class,
students are reading one of three novels, White
Fang by Jack London, October Sky by Homer
Hickam, or And Then There Were None by
Agatha Christie. For each novel, there is a
series of small projects to be completed in the
analysis of the piece. In U.S. History class we
are fighting our way through the Civil
War. History projects are to be completed by
May 8 and we anticipate that the war will be
over soon. In Science, we are tumbling into
rocks and minerals after this week. The
students will not lose their luster and are going
to shine down the home stretch of the school
year.
Silver Lions – In Algebra we are finishing our
last unit on factoring before the Keystone
Exams. Intro to Algebra is solving multi-step
inequalities. Geometry is working on
properties of circles. In Science we completed
our study of Earthquakes and Volcanos. We
will continue to study geology by investigating
rocks and minerals. We will then end the year
taking a look at Earth's water systems. We are
also currently working on our Earth Day
project which is due May 4th. In History the
Silver Lions are in the mist of the Civil
War. Some students are even in suspense and
can't wait to find out who wins! We will be
getting into specific battles in the upcoming
days. The Civil War projects are being
finalized for submission on student H drives.
In English class, students have been analyzing
poetry and learning how to write theme
statements based on the evidence they find in
the poems we study. We have been focusing
on historical poems, which have themes similar
to the units of literature we have studied this
year. After this unit, students will be engaging
in a choice novel unit, where they will be
involved with keeping a portfolio of the
analysis they do throughout the unit.
