WHAT ARE THE CONTINENTS?
Continents make up the largest
landmasses on earth. There are 7
of these continents, and we will
look at all of them today.
EUROPE
Europe is the 6th largest continent
in the world. It covers about
4,000,000 square miles and
contains many countries. It is
located in the east near Asia and
Africa.
ASIA
Asia is the largest continent in the
world, both in size and population,
and also contains many countries.
It is located in the east, and covers
about 17 million square miles.
AFRICA
Africa is the second-largest
continent in the world—both in size
and in population. It covers almost
12 million square miles in land area.
AUSTRALIA/ OCEANIA
Australia, also called Oceania, is
the smallest of the 7 continents in
the world in land area, and the
second smallest in population. It
covers a mere 3.27 million square
miles in land area.
ANTARCTICA
Antarctica is a continent that is
located in the south, and it is
mostly covered by ice. It is almost
entirely contained in the Antarctic
Circle, and is surrounded by the
Southern Ocean. It is sparsely
inhabited.
NORTH AMERICA
North America is located almost
entirely in the northern and western
hemispheres. It is the third largest
continent in land area (covering
about 9 ½ million square miles) and
the fourth largest in population.
SOUTH AMERICA
South America is the fourth largest
continent in the world (in terms of
size), and the fifth largest in terms
of population. It covers roughly 6
½ million square miles of land area.
CONCLUSION
So, now you know the names of
our 7 continents and how they
compare in terms of size and
population. Great job!
