WELCOME TO THE ASTRONOMY CAFE
Some people enjoy a meal of appetizers and desserts while others skip these and go straight for the
main course! Depending on your appetite, you will need to choose your own menu from the
projects below. In order to feed your appetite, your meal MUST add up to a total of 30 points no
matter how you arrange it. Please note: If you choose to skip the main course, you must choose
some combination of appetizer and dessert. You will have two days of class time to begin your
meal preparation and then your final feast must be completed at home.
ASTRONOMICAL APPETIZERS:
❖ Create a triple venn-diagram comparing and contrasting the three main types of galaxies, their
stars, make-up, etc. You must have 5 new facts per section of the diagram. (10 points)
❖ Research how the planets were given their names. Then, use the name of FOUR planets to write out
an acrostic poem for each with a sentence beginning with each letter to explain how that planet is
named or who it is named after and why. (10 points)
❖ Research Earth’s magnetic field. Create a magazine article including an image and a paragraph
or two explaining what causes the magnetic field as well as a paragraph or two explaining what it
does for us. (20 points)
COSMIC MAIN COURSES:
❖ Choose one planet to research and create a tri-fold travel brochure with facts about your planet.
Must include: The length of a day (rotation time) and year (revolution time), distance from the sun,
general temperature and size of the planet, moons and rings (If any) and any IMPORTANT
information or special features that we should know about for the planet (This should be the majority
of your brochure information that persuades people to come to your planet.) (30 points)
❖ What is a black hole? Research and create a Google Slides or Prezi presentation including
pictures and information regarding how they form, their size, how scientists identify them, how they
affect space, and any impact on our planet, system or galaxy. (30 points)
DEEP SPACE DESSERTS:
❖ Research about the moons of a planet other than Earth. Then create a crossword puzzle with
information about the moons, including at least 20 questions with an answer key. (10 points)
❖ Research the five dwarf planets in our solar system. Then create a Quizlet with at least 20
questions and answers about their composition, when they were classified and other important pieces
of information. (10 points)
❖ Research what types of technology are used to study the night sky (telescopes, satellites, probes, etc).
Make a poster about three different types including history of the technology, images, how they
work and what they help us to study. (20 points)
❖ Research the International Space Station. Create a bi-fold pamphlet that advertises the space
station including information on its history, how it works, what it does, who is there, how long they
stay and what it’s like for them on a daily basis. (20 points)
