Mary Barlow Many people think they know how to study, but Few really know. I learned a few tricks that I am going to share with you. I love to read! Any book, any day. I can read 4 to 5 hours everyday and be completely happy. What I did not know was textbooks were not as much fun to read. In fact they were boring! I’m not an old dog, but I learned a new trick. One trick I use is to just move my eyes faster. The brain can comprehend much faster than the eyes. Muscle Reading helps me be more attentive and I remember more. Before I read I preview and ask question. While I read I answer questions. After I finish reading I review and recite. If reading is difficult I read it out loud or I stand up to read it. Changing modes can help me learn. It might work for you too. You could also talk to someone: the instructor, other students, or your tutor. There’s no shame in a tutor. Notes, who likes notes? What use were they? Math, maybe. Why were they necessary? Luckily I did not need notes during high school and I quickly learned some strategies for my college courses. There are many note taking strategies. You just have to select which strategy Will be most effective. Notes can be wonderful study guides. They make you summarize lectures. Writing in a textbook is a strategy that only works if 10% or less is highlighted. Writing in margins, circling, and changing punctuation.! Using only one side of a page will help during study time. I can spread out my papers and quickly study. Watching the instructor for clues will give clues to what is important, therefore, marking important notes. Most imperative to note taking is when to review. Notes must be reviewed within 24 hours to make the important points stick. The only way to accomplish this is dedication and time management. Time management is something everyone has heard of but it is something I had never really used before. Applying time management only works if you are willing to put in the effort it takes. Time management is the only way to accomplish, well, anything. Even if you do not notice. Time management is always a factor. Planning my hours is the most effective for me watching my time is the only way this will work. If I do not watch my time I will more likely spend too much time on one thing and not enough on another. I am going to be an elementary educator. Teachers are always learning new things. I will be able to use my note taking strategies and my textbook reading strategies in my future. To have a class that I KNOW I will be able to use in the future is useful. I cannot always see the point of a class but I can see the point of this one.
