Creating Stained Glass Windows Instructions
This project will help you develop a firm understanding on how artists and engineers use linear equations to build stained
glass windows.
Standard (s):
 Understand and compare the properties of linear and nonlinear functions
 Analyze linear and quadratic functions by investigating rates of change, intercepts and zeros
 Use symbolic algebra to represent and solve problems that involve linear and quadratic relationships
Essential Question:
Enduring Understandings:
How can slope be used to create structures?
By understanding the different components of slope,
buildings and other structures can be created so they can be
visually pleasing.
Context
Real World Application:
Stained glass is an art form that requires artistic skill to create appropriate and workable designs. It also requires
the engineering skills to assemble each piece. Your task is to make a visually pleasing design of a stained glass
window and to make a modified design of your original to fit a different situation. You will also need to think
about which location you would want to display your window.
Procedures
You will create 1 stained glass window by graphing equations on the coordinate planes provided. You will discuss
how your stained glass window has a “workable design” and in which location you would want to display your
window.
Guiding Steps
1.) Research stained glass windows and organize your information _____
2.) Choose equations to make your window and follow other instructions on pg 4 _____
3.) Using pencil, graph the 12 equations on the graph paper ______
4.) Color each section a different color ______
5.) First draft of response to written questions ______
6.) Partner will proofread instructions, initial each proofread question, & turn in to Ms. Barrios _______
7.) Write final draft of written questions _______

Creating Stained Glass Window
Circle three linear equations in each box and write them in the blanks below. Complete each table by finding the x- and
y-intercepts OR the slope and the y-intercept. You will label if the line has a positive, negative, zero or undefined slope
in the appropriate blank. Make sure to circle your answer if necessary. Then graph the twelve linear equations on the
coordinate plane on the sheet of graph paper. Write the equation neatly (and in pencil) on each line that you graph.

Using Math to Understand the Creation of Stained Glass Windows
1. When do you graph equations by using slope and the y-intercept? When do you graph equations by using
intercepts? Why is it important to know what method to use when to graphing equations?

2. Describe the window that you created. Using at least 4 vocabulary words from this chapter, write about the
different components of your window. Use complete sentences (at least 4 – 5) and proper grammar.

3. Explain how the slope of each line affects the design of one of your stained glass windows. In other words,
describe how your window would look different if the slope of each line were steeper (if m was a large number)
or flatter (if m was a small number like a fraction). Use words such as positive, negative, undefined, or zero
slope and write your answer in 4 – 5 complete sentences.

4. Write a math paragraph about the mathematical process for making your window. What did you do first,
second, third, etc? Be very specific and use at least 4 vocabulary words from the chapter.
