Objective: To compare and contrast a theme found in Lord of the Flies and Things Fall Apart. During our study of Things Fall Apart, you will work on a comparison/contrast paper. You must focus on a theme that is found in both Lord of the Flies and Things Fall Apart. Issues you might explore include learning one’s faults, the loss of innocence, finding redemption, and the nature of evil. Remember to consider elements such as setting, situation, characterization, symbolism, and allusion and how they contribute to the development of each novel's theme. As we get further into our study of Things Fall Apart, you will be asked to submit a paper topic and tentative thesis statement. I will be sure to give you advance warning about the due date for these items. Taking good notes during our discussion of Things Fall Apart and referring to those you took during our study of Lord of the Flies will speed up the process of finding quotes to use as evidence/support in your paper. When using quotes from the novels, you must use page citations. We will be covering the appropriate way to make these citations. There is no specific length requirement for the paper. However, in order to fully develop your thesis, your paper will need to be at least three pages in length. Your essay must be typed and double-spaced. If, for some reason, your computer will not print your paper, you must bring in the disk on which it is saved in order to receive full credit. I cannot stress enough the importance of using quotes for support and providing explanation of the quotes you choose to use as evidence. Remember that every idea presented in your paper MUST directly relate to your thesis statement. Refer to the green writing text in the room for specific information on how to structure your paper. I WILL DEDUCT POINTS FOR INCORRECT GRAMMAR, SPELLING, AND PUNCTUATION. I will provide you with a copy of Lord of the Flies to use as you work on this paper.
