Big Idea How does a school work? Science Standard 7.1.b: Students know the characteristics that distinguish plant cells from animal cells, including chloroplasts and cell walls. Paraphrase: The cell membrane surrounds the cytoplasm of the cell. It acts as a boundary layer to contain the cytoplasm (fluid in cell). It allows water, oxygen, and other materials to pass in and out of cells. Cytoplasm is the material between the cell’s nucleus and the cell membrane. It fills the entire cell. It contains a large variety of organelles and nutrients. The cytoplasm consists of an outer ectoplasm and an inner endoplasm. It stores nutrients. The nucleus is the cell’s command center. The cell nucleus contains the cell's DNA, the genetic code. The mitochondria provide the energy for the cell. Organelles are small structures that help carry out the day-to-day operations of the cell. Types of organelles: Ribosome are organelles which participate in protein synthesis. Mitochondrion, the power plants of the cell, are organelles that produce energy. Lysosomes are organelles that contain enzymes that aid in the digestion. All cells have three main areas: the cell membrane, the cytoplasm, and the nucleus. There are cells that are organisms onto themselves, such as microscopic amoeba and bacteria cells. There are cells that only function when part of a larger organism, such as the cells that make up your body. Animal Cell Centrioles Plant Cell Cell membrane Ribosomes Goldi apparatus Endoplasmic reticulum Lysosomes Vacuoles Mitochondria Cytoskeleton Cell wall Chloroplasts Write down two questions you have about this chapter! Plant cells have a cell wall around their plasma (cell) membrane, animal cells don’t. Plant cells have chloroplasts for photosynthesis, animal cells don’t. Animal cells have centrioles, which help in cell division, plant cells don’t Do animal cells contain cell walls? No! How is the nucleus like the manager of a company? The nucleus directs functions of the cells, just as manager directs functions of a company. Which cell has a cell wall plant or animal? What is the function of the nucleus? “Looking Inside Cells” Worksheet #3 and 16 “Looking Inside Cells” Worksheet #117
