Three elements of health and wellness Health and Wellness • To achieve optimal health and wellness we must include and balance the six elements in society. These are : Physical, spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional and environmental. • Out of these six elements, top three elements are : Physical, mental and environmental. • Working on these three elements in the society would make us stronger and help us in achieving our optimum wellness to keep us progressing towards our ultimate goal. The Six Elements of Health and Wellness • • • • • • Physical Social Environmental Emotional Spiritual Intellectual/Mental Physical Health To achieve optimal physical health eating right, getting regular exercise, and being at your recommended body weight are the three important things to consider. Physical health is also avoiding drugs and alcohol and being free of disease and sickness Steps to protect and enhance immune system and maintain physical health • Avoid smoking and drinking. • Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, fibre and whole grains, and low in saturated fat. • Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight. • Get adequate sleep. • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly. • Get regular medical screening tests . Diabetes : top three strategies for prevention : • Weight control • Diet control • Avoid smoking, restrict alcohol and get adequate rest • They key to preventing type 2 diabetes can be boiled down to five words: Stay lean and stay active. Intellectual/Mental Health Mental health is the ability to cope with the demands of daily life. It is maintaining harmonious relationships with others and having spiritual direction and purpose with one’s ethics, morals, and values. Environmental Health Maintaining good environmental health requires one to keep the air and water clean, food safe, and the surroundings enjoyable. Environmental Effects on Our Health. • There are multiple indoor and outdoor pollutants • Molds & asbestos - Common indoor pollutants. • Carbon monoxides and sulfur dioxides common outdoor pollutants •Wellness is a continuum ranging from death to optimal health. •You can choose your behaviors to move closer to optimal health.
