This proposal will provide a tax credit to eligible companies of 20% on research and development and manufacturing property and a 10% credit for qualified research and development expenses. Our member companies and testing laboratories will benefit from this tax credit which will encourage the development of the energy storage sector in New York. We are uniquely qualified to host and lead the energy storage industry. Major market studies have identified New York as the national leader in several important energy-storage industry sub-clusters including batteries, fuel cells and electronic capacitors. Current markets for energy storage systems and devices represent a $60 billion annual market that is experiencing double digit growth and still accelerating. This credit will allow companies and laboratories in New York to grow the market and create jobs. Energy storage will be a critical component in achieving the State’s energy goals and transforming the State’s economy to one that is fueled by renewable and clean energy sources. The New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology (NY‐BEST) Consortium was incorporated in January 2010 as a New York State not‐for‐profit corporation to help position New York as a global leader in energy storage technology for transportation, electric grid, and other applications. NY‐BEST seeks to build the battery and energy storage industry in New York by providing members with access to testing and characterization capabilities, driving economic development initiatives, promoting commercialization activities, supporting networking and technology transfer, and providing research and development assistance. We bring together industry, university and government partners. Our members represent all facets of the energy and energy storage industries and span every region of the State and beyond. Members include companies ranging from small entrepreneurial ventures to large global corporations such as General Motors and General Electric, as well as leading research universities.
