Chemistry Lap 9 Chap. 11.1, 11.2, 12.1 Chemical Reactions & Stoichiometry www.miffliniwa.weebly.com Essential Question: How can we use chemical equations to represent chemical reactions? Rationale: The purpose of this unit is to use what we have learned about compounds and molecules to discover how elements and compounds combine in chemical reactions. We will learn to write, balance, classify and predict the products of chemical reactions. We will also learn about the mole, the SI unit for measuring the amount of something, and learn to calculate the molar mass of an element or compound. This will allow us to interpret balanced chemical equations in terms of atoms, moles and the masses of reactants and products, and we will affirm the Law of Conservation of Mass which we learned about at the beginning of the year. Objectives: After completing this lap, students will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Describe how to write a word equation and a skeleton equation for a chemical reaction. Be able to balance a chemical reaction. Be able to identify the five general types of reactions, and predict their products. Describe what a mole is, and be able to calculate molar mass of an Element or compound. Interpret balanced chemical equations in terms of atoms, moles and mass. Independent Activity 1.
