Introduction
Like many cultures around the world, the
Vikings were polytheists'.
What does polytheism mean?
A. Belief in one god.
B. Belief in many gods
• Father of the gods
• Spear-wielding god of
battle
• Creator of heaven
and earth.
• God of Thunder
• Rode heaven in a goatdrawn chariot. Vikings
thought that thunder was
caused by the wheels of his
chariot rolling across the sky.
• Thor was a bringer of good
luck. Many Vikings carried
charms in the shape of
hammers.
• The most mild-mannered
of the three main gods.
• God of fruitfulness and
fertility.
• People sacrificed to Frey
during times of
celebrating a wedding.
Four of our days on a calendar are
named after Norse Gods?
Do you know which ones?!
Viking Leaders:
Eric the Red
Leif Erikson
• Childhood home was
Iceland
• Kicked out of Iceland for
his bad temper and for
murder
• Set sail and founded a
colony..
Greenland!
• Around the year 1,000 Leif set
sail from Greenland and into
the pages of history.
• Landed in a place he called
Vineland (Vin-land) because of
the wild grapes that grew
there.
• Vikings did reach North
America (Newfoundland
Canada) but there are no
grapes there. So where did he
go? That is one of histories
greatest mysteries.
HAPPY LEIF ERIKSON DAY!
