The focus for each class is as follows: Fresh Start Cadet – studying teaching strategies, planning and executing activities and lessons, and at-risk behaviors while helping general education freshmen successfully transition into high school. LOHS FEA Future Educators of America (FEA) is an international student organization dedicated to supporting young people interested in education-related careers. FEA helps its members develop essential skills that will lead to becoming highly trained and qualified teachers. The FEA National Conference is in Washington D.C. in April 2015. We plan to bring a small group of students. It’s an amazing learning and networking opportunity that is available to all LOHS FEA members. In February of 2014, six LOHS FEA members traveled to San Antonio to attend the Texas Association of Future Educators conference. They were able to a variety of sessions, designed for high school students interested in teaching, including sessions on reading strategies, empowering yourself, and the impact wonderful teachers have on their students. In May of 2013 four LOHS FEA members traveled to Orlando to go to the FEA National Conference. Liz Dow competed at this conference; she wrote and delivered an impassioned piece on the freedom of speech in public schools; she received 3rd place for her speech! Three other LOHS students attended sessions there which centered around leadership and teaching. It was a great experience. LOHS FEA meetings are held on Wednesdays before school in room 257 (Ms. Barnes’s room). See http://futureeducators.org/ for more information about national FEA.
